Charles Whitty Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Dr. Charles Dennis Whitty, on December 11, 2022.
Dennis is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Lorna; his children Patrick (Theresa), Chris (Suzy), Brett, Carolyn (Ted), and Sharon (Jurek); his brother Ray Whitty (late Fay Whitty) and sister Janet Bishop (late Tom Bishop). He is predeceased by his parents Charles Rodger Whitty and Charlotte Whitty (nee Welstead), and aunt Jean Whitty. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Nick, Erin, Shannon (Whitty); Erika (Whitty); Evelyn, Amelia, Sebastian (Whitty); Midori, Ronin (Chun); Ruth and Arthur (Whitty-Smolen); nieces and nephews; uncle Joe Whitty; and cousins.
He also leaves behind his devoted office staff Kelly, Lauren, and Sheila; former staff and work family Stephanie, Gerry, Joan, Helene, and Sandi — and his many colleagues and friends in the medical community.
Dennis grew up in St. Catharines on a farm with his parents and two siblings. Although not having chosen farming as his profession, he was a typical farmer through and through. He believed in getting up with the sun (or before), and enjoyed farming his land on the weekends.
He graduated from St. Catharines Collegiate Institute where he met Lorna (nee Hardinge), although their love story began later. He attended the Ontario Agricultural College of the University of Toronto (now University of Guelph), and was a proud Aggie. He obtained an MSc in Plant Biochemistry at the University of Guelph, and a PhD in Plant Physiology & Biochemistry at Purdue University in Indiana.
Between graduate studies, he briefly worked in plant research at the Vineland Research & Innovation Centre; and on completion of his PhD, was hired as a Research Fellow in the Department of Biochemistry at McMaster University. His published (1970s) work in the field of Plant Biochemistry continues to be cited, including in recent textbooks — a fact he was quite proud to learn (via Google) later in his life.
Never tiring of education, he went on to pursue the study of Medicine at the University of Toronto, where he found his true calling. After graduation he worked in the Emergency Department at the Welland County General Hospital, and in 1980 began his own practice on Carlton Street in St. Catharines; he also served as chief of staff at the Hotel Dieu Hospital. Over the years he cared for many members of the community, devoting himself to his patients. His tireless work ethic saw him delivering babies well into his 70s. He was known to habitually work weekends — often doing home visits — and was on call 24/7 for his patients. He spent his last day working for the care of others.
When Dennis wasn't working he enjoyed flying, with destinations such as Miami, Edmonton, and Wawa. He also enjoyed photography, reading, skiing, scuba diving, windsurfing, tree planting, beekeeping, and fishing. He took on many construction projects involving carpentry, concrete work, and plumbing. In his later years, he enjoyed traveling the world with Lorna, spending time with his family, watching baseball, and engaged in wildlife conservation.
He is loved and will be greatly missed by his family, and his many patients (many of whom he delivered).
A celebration of life will take place in the New Year. In lieu of flowers, donations to 'Heart and Stroke' or 'The Hotel Dieu Shaver Hospital' would be appreciated.
Arrangements entrusted to the George Darte Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 585 Carlton St., 905-937-4444.

On behalf of the Niagara Senators pharmaceutical rep association, I wish to extend our collective condolences to Dr. Whitty's family and friends and staff. Dr. Whitty was a true gem of a gentleman, always generous with his time to discuss the latest developments in the world of medicine and how he could best serve his patients. It was always a pleasure to see him glow with pride when sharing stories about his family and their latest endeavours, and watch him light up when talking about his many hobbies, for example, a flight he had recently flown. Dr. Whitty will be greatly missed among our community. All the best to the his family moving forward.

He was the most wonderful man and doctor. He was a true pleasure to know. He was kind and thoughtful and and trusting. He will be so greatly missed by my family. I had the pleasure of knowing him for over 40 years. The world was a much better place with him in it and because of him. I started being his patient when i was just 18 yrs old. He was my Dr. but he was also someone who called me friend. He gave me brotherly advise sometimes and when my parents passed he gave me fatherly advise. He was a confidant that just listened when life was very difficult. Our family's hearts go out to his family and staff. He was greatly loved for the wonderful person that he truly was. To the entire Whitty family and staff
It was with great sadness we heard of the passing of Dr. Whitty.
I personally had just spoke to Dr. Whitty less than 24 hours before his passing. He of course, doing what he has always done, called our house asking how we were and giving my wife her information to ease her mind after test results.
Dr. Whitty was a one of a kind Doctor. He has been our family´s doctor for four generations of family members.
We have been with Dr. Whitty and his many staff members since the 1980s.
The most caring of any doctor around in modern times.
From his house calls to my late mother-in-law, the numerous phone calls to our family over the years, he has always been there for our family.
He will be truly missed by all.
We have had countless hunting and fishing stories over the years, right up to my last visit with him. The big wild turkeys running around his backyard. He had to show me the photos. The stories my wife always brought home after seeing him were, has Tim been out fishing? Barb would tell him. Has Tim been doing any hunting? Barb would tell him the results. Keep in mind, this is all going on while examining my wife for whatever her issue was at the time. My wife Barbara always absorbed the questions and then had to tell me about her appointment as soon as she come home.
Like most I´m sure, we do not have enough space to document all that doctor Whitty has done for our family.
Dr. Whitty was like our own family member and that's the rarity he had brought to all who got to know him well.
Our heart felt condolences go out to the Whitty family and all the staff we have had the pleasure of dealing with over these many years.
Tim, Barbara, Amber (Beam) and Johnathan Ballantyne

We have always included him in our prayers because we know there will never be anyone like him. We will miss you dearly Dr. Whitty.

Like Everyone, I am still shocked and saddened to hear that Dr. Whitty has passed away.
My sister (Betty Anderson) was his patient and friend for many years and on her request he agreed to become my Dr. even with the Overload of Patients He already had.
On my recent last visit, I mentioned that I was falling apart due to so many aches and pains!
He chuckled and said it´s Just Old Age!
He was soooo down to earth, compassionate, caring and always took the time to listen.
He was like an Encyclopedia of Knowledge and I Truly enjoyed listening to his expertise on so many Topics.
My Sincere Condolences to Dr. Whitty´s Family, Friends and Kind Dedicated Office Staff.

Our sincerest condolences to the Whitty family. We remember him so fondly when back on Mother´s Day in 1982 he came rushing to help with the delivery of our preemie baby. He was there for us during a very difficult time and we are grateful. Our precious daughter thrived when we weren´t sure what to expect and we are grateful for his care and kindness during that time. Thank you Whitty family for letting him be there for us at the most inopportune time.

We were blessed and privileged to have Dr Whitty as our family physician for many many years, a doctor who truly lived by his oath. Caring, far above and beyond, not just for his patients, but for their families too, as we can attest to this from personal experience. Shocking and sad news as we listened to the message from Dr Whitty´s office on Monday morning, as he and his staff have guided our family, always there for us, that would be no more. Our most sincere condolences to Lorna & family. Words cannot express the sadness & shock we are feeling!
As many have said, Dr Whitty was more than a doctor, he was a true friend. He was always there with compassion & help when ever we needed him. He was a true support as well to my parents, ( Jim & Irene Swan), making many visits to their home, when they were unable to go to him.
We will miss him so terribly, but will be forever grateful for the wonderful care he gave to us all.
As an ER doctor in Burlington said .... "They don´t make Dr. Whitty´s anymore!"
May you Rest In Peace Dennis!

As I sit here and write this I cry....you were not only my boss, but you were my doctor, my listener, my friend. You taught me so many valuable skills that I use every day. I speak of you often, even before you passed. I saw you the week before you passed, and there you were teaching Kelly and I again lol, you crouching on the floor, being ever the gentlemen and giving me the chair. I will miss you Dennis. My family will miss you. As my dad said, you saved his life. You left behind a huge legacy that will never be forgotten, a family who will miss you, and a wife who loved you. Keep smiling Dr. Whitty. Our Condolences go out to the Whitty Family.... We have Nothing but Love, Gratitued and Respect to give... What a SAD SAD day... We lost a long time family friend and the world lost an amazing one of a kind Doctor... I've known him my whole life, he brought me into this world... He postponed his hunting trip to bring Declan into this work... He took in whole family as patients when they moved here from Taiwan, he took in my husband too... My dad was one of his first patients had met him when he was a student in school for paramedics .... So this loss is truly painful for us... Dr. Whitty has helped my me and my family in si many ways... If we were too sick to go to him, he would come to our house... That man lived a great life, he flew planes, hunted, rode motorcycles, delivered babies, was an astounding ER Dr, I believe he was Coroner at one point and had PhD in Microbiology or Biochemistry? What a well lived life.... When my dad worked Ambulance he saw Dr. Whitty single-handedly take down a violent drunk that was hurting the nurses... Always helping people... A very eccentric man he was always mumbling and whistling... The people he helped along the way is just gotta be endless... You will be greatly missed... Thank you for all you have done for us... You will truly be missed by us all... He has taken care of our Family for over 3 generations and we feel the loss greatly... He was our Doctor and our Friend... xoxo

There will never be another Dr.Whitty, Niagara Region was so blessed and fortunate to have such a kind, caring and compassionate (list could go on) doctor. My family hoped that our beloved Dr. Whitty would live forever. As a patient of over 35 years, he cared for me, delivered my babies, cracked jokes at every visit and knew us like no one else did, or ever will. I hope they he knew how important he was and how so many of us relied on him. Lorna and the rest of the staff were an extention to this care, and always took such great care of 4 generations of my family. He will be terribly missed and never replaced.

Words just feel so hollow. However they are said with profound sympathy to the Whitty family. So deeply sorry for all of you to have lost such a wonderful man. He was a brilliant friend and colleague; so much dedication to his calling, so much compassion for his patients, staff. He was a pillar to his community in actions, thoughts and commitment to all his ventures and adventures. St. Catharine´s has lost a truly exemplary man, however it pales in comparison to your grief. Deepest sympathies.

Dr. Whitty was my all time favourite doctor to call on as a pharmaceutical rep and my all time favourite person to spend time talking with. He helped me through my own personal difficulties along the way, simply because he was one of the special few people in this world who truly cared for and about others.
I left Canada 3 years ago and didn't take the time to say goodbye because I truly dislike that thought. It left me hopeful that I would see him again. To his beautiful wife Lorna, the incredible staff who worked for him and to his family, I offer my sincerest condolences. I trust all of you will find peace in knowing that Dr. Whitty lived a life all of us would envy. A scholar, a friend, a true gentleman. Rest in peace. God be with you all.

My condolences go out to the Whitty family and to his working family. I was shocked then saddened to hear the news of Dr. Whitty´s passing. About 30 years ago (although i think it was probably longer) he took in a person who had had a severe injury to his fingers. Without question, that day,he accepted me as one of his own. Over 30 years of numerous injuries i got to know him on not just a proffesional level but also on a personal level. An imposing man back in the day he projected an intimidating pressence. Soft spoken, kind, caring,he was everything but. He always listened when i said something wasn´t right and always followed up. During the many years we also just talked. Not about Dr./patient stuf but about other stuff. Life stuff. The things that really mattered.I came to look up to him not only as a professinal but also as a life mentor, even a friend. He is a man i will never forget. Goodbye Dr. Whitty. I am saddened. I am heartbroken.I am grieving a great man.

My heart is truly broken with the loss of my Doctor, my friend, my confidant of forty four years. He's opened me up and stitched me back together. He mended my broken bones and my broken heart. He delivered two of my beloved granddaughters. He was kind enough to join my family in celebration of my Mother's 90th birthday and helped us deal with her passing 7 years later as he had when our Father passed. He would get a sly grin on his face when i would see him after his " Bambi " hunting and i knew that i was about to see pictures that he knew would cause me to tease him. I am so grateful to Lorna and the entire Whitty family for sharing this amazing man with us. I know we took him away from you all much more than you would have desired. How could you not want a gentle man like him with you all day, every day. I am so very sorry for your loss. I saw him just two weeks before he passed and even though the nurses were trying hard to keep him on a tight 1/2 hour schedule we hadn't seen each other for such a long time that we blew past that deadline catching up with each others news. In the last ten years or so we would give each other a hug on my way out as only old friends can do. I will treasure that last hug for the rest of my days. I never said these words in life but i will say them now. I love you Dennis.

Dr. Whitty you were the best doctor ever!.You delivered 2 of my children one of which you stayed overnight in the St.Catharines General so you would be there for my delivery. The nurses were so surprised and nervous that a doctor would do that. You took care of both my parents when they were dying. You made house calls to my home. You gave me your cell phone number so I could reach you anytime of the day or night. You always made time to listen and always had stories to tell. You had a great sense of humor, a kind heart and endkess knowledge about so many subjects. I loved listening to you talk about your wife, children and grandchildren. You were so proud of them!
You loved flying, fishing and hunting. I was so happy you had interests outside of work. You were truly dedicated to all your patients! My whole family will miss you dearly!
My condolences to Mrs. Whitty and the family.

My deepest condolences to Mrs. Whitty and to Dr. Whitty´s family. May you rest in peace Dr. Whitty. You were much more than a Dr to me. From the time I met you years ago when you took care of my parents, until I last saw you a few weeks ago, you were always a source of comfort and inspiration to me. A wise, caring and thoughtful Dr. who touched my heart. I so enjoyed when our conversations turned from health matters and we chatting about life and our various interests. I am heartbroken to hear of your passing. I hope you are flying high . Steve and I will have a scotch in your honour. Cheryl Chiarelli

What a shock learning of Dr. Whittys passing. He was my family doctor for 40+ years
I considered him not just my doctor but a great friend. He delivered 2 of my 4 children and took the greatest care of all of us. He made many house calls to save us from taking sick kids out. Our entire family will forever have him in our hearts. Our deepest sympathy goes out to his wife Lorna and all of the family. Also to his work family that made office visits so fun. We didn't get a chance to have a last goodbye but I know we will meet again in the future. RIP Dennis and we have all lost a great man

Dr. Whitty was truly a great person. He cared beyond being a family physician. He took on caring for my mother in law when she was at the end of her life, even though she was not a patient for many years. We met Dennis in 1983 when he looked after my father in law and has been our family Dr. since. His wife, children, staff and many, many families will truly miss a wonderful, funny and truly genuine caring person. You will be forever missed and loved. Our deepest condolences to his family and staff.

Our earliest memory of Dr. Whitty was the heartfelt and hilarious speech he gave at my mother´s retirement dinner from the Hotel Dieu Hospital in 1988. We were blessed to have him as our family doctor for many years. We will miss him dearly. Our sincere condolences and love to Mrs. Whitty and family.

The only times I met dr.Whitty was in Nov.1978, when I was called to come into the St.Catharines General Hospital, because my husband Jan Prins, had been brought in , Dr.Whitty met me and asked me if he had heart-problems before, and yes he had ,he said, with tears in his eyes,, that explains why I could not resuscitate him, he was so young! He asked me to come and see him, after the funeral, and when I did, he wanted to know the whole story! So I told him, and he was so sympathetic, and caring and said if I ever needed to talk, to come and see him, he also spoke to our Dr. W.G. Dobson, another wonderful Doctor, about us! Later I got a job in housekeeping at the Dieu,,I had 3 teenagers to support, and every time he saw me he would chat! A person like that you never forget, and when I saw his picture in the Standard today, I cried, they just don't make them like that anymore! May you all be comforted by the great memories you must have of him! My Sincere Condolences, Klara Harssema(nee Prins)

I met you 46 years ago, I was 12. You had to sew up my head. I knew then you were special, and would be forever in my life. You always made me feel loved, and for that I am grateful. You and Lorna's love could be felt through your office. I was lucky to see you one last time before we moved. I got to hug you and say I love you. You were my friend, doctor and a huge part of my family. Lorna and family our prayers are with you.

Dr. Whitty was a great man, a wonderful friend and a truly caring and dedicated Physician. He was always there for me. I felt safe in those big farmer hands. He always had a smile on his face and a great sense of humor. I had called him a week before he passed on a Saturday, on his private cell phone for a medication prescription. He ordered it, picked it up and delivered it to my home. The medication saved my life. That was an example of his dedication and care for his patients. His shocking passing has left a big hole in my life. I will always miss and think fondly of him. Rest in peace old friend.
Sincerely and with great sadness,
