Jeremy HACKING Obituary

June 27, 1951 - January 19, 2021 Jeremy took his last breath at Maple Park Lodge in Ft. Erie, Ontario on January 19, 2021. He was not alone when he died peacefully with Frontal Temporal Dementia at the age of 69. Jeremy is survived by his wife of 48 years, Dede (nee Eleanor Diane Fryer); his sons Jack (John) and JB (James); his daughter-in-law, Naseem Awl; his grandchildren, Leila and Alia; and his brothers, Jonathan and Julian and their families. Jeremy was predeceased by his father John and mother Jean (nee Anderson). There is no question that Jeremy's life centred on love of his family. He was an avid walker and reader, he loved the beach and swimming in the sea and came later in life to enjoy playing bridge, golfing and scuba diving. Growing up Jeremy lived in Worcestershire, Belfast, Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire, Devon, Somerset, Middlesex, Dorset, Bristol and London. After articling with Howell Wade, Gray's Inn, London, England, Jeremy joined Coopers and Lybrand, Gutter Lane, London. From there he transferred to Coopers and Lybrand, Toronto, Canada where he was a partner for many years. Over the years, Jeremy volunteered his time to The Froebel Foundation, the Computer Auditors Association, St. Jude's Church, Appleby College, The United Way of Oakville, and the Niagara CPA Ontario Association. As dementia stripped away much of who Jeremy was, his essential kind, good-hearted, and determined nature remained - as did his loyalty, love, and concern for is family, friends, and colleagues. Jeremy's family is thankful for the Alzheimers Society, Queenston Place, Maple Park Lodge and the many family and friends who supported them on this journey. Private cremation and interment is planned at St. Jude's Anglican Church Memorial Garden, Oakville. If desired, donations would be welcome to the Alzheimer's Society of Niagara (alzheimer.ca/niagara/en/home) or the Washington National Cathedral (cathedral.org/support-ministries/)

I got to know and had the pleasure of working with Jeremy at C&L during the early days of computer auditing. I remember well Jeremy’s pragmatic style, wry sense of humour and hearty laugh.
I offer my condolences to Mrs Hacking and family.

Hello. I would like to express my condolences to Dede and the family. I worked with Jeremy over the years at Coopers & Lybrand, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and IBM. I first met him in 1980 when he was the course leader and I was a candidate on a national six-week intensive computer audit course at the Donald Gordon Centre for continuing education in Kingston, Ontario. He was part nerd, part businessman, and a very demanding leader. Over the years, although we were stationed in different cities, we collaborated on different auditing mandates and consulting projects. He was a positive person who delighted in dealing with difficult problems. He also had a keen business sense, which I tried to emulate. In 1998, after our firm merged with Price Waterhouse, both of us were assigned exclusively to consulting projects in a powerful national consulting practice led by Mike Stoneham. He led the JD Edwards ERP System implementation practice and landed a very big system integration contract in Montreal. When a succession of project leaders stepped aside due to health problems, Jeremy asked me to fill the gap. I was his willing victim and spent the next two years managing an extraordinarily complex and intense project, under his overall supervision. I very much appreciated working with him and for him. May he rest in peace.

Jeremy was at the genesis of what was then the C&L Computer Audit Group (CAG). When he joined this group from UK, he added significantly to our skills. I will never forget the ‘Sherlockian’ pipe that was ever present in those days. It was an effective prop when he delivered a well considered thought.
Spending time with Jeremy, whether working or relaxing, was always interesting and fun. He contributed much to all of us who worked with him and will be missed.

So saddened to hear of the passing of Jeremy after his valiant fight against the illness that took him way too soon. We both have many fond memories of our times with JSTH during our times with C&L, CLCG, PwC Consulting and IBM. He was one of a kind and contributed greatly to our collective success. So very glad to have had the pleasure of sharing the journey with Jeremy from 1978 onwards. He will be greatly missed.
Our deepest condolences to Dede and the boys.

I remember Jeremy as a partner with a smile, and always with time to talk. While we didn't work much together, my most vivid memory is a long (or seemed long) bike ride at a PwC retreat in the Rockies. He was a trooper, and I felt we bonded in the agony of hill climbing in hot weather. I am very sorry for your loss, Eleanor and family.

Jeremy was instrumental in the creation and launch of Consulting University, which started at C&L, continued into PwC, and also had a run at IBM when they bought PwC's consulting business in 2002.

Learning was very important to Jeremy and those days & nights spent in Consulting University at Spencer Hall in London, Ontario were some of the most memorable and enjoyable times for many of us.

Truly a great guy with whom I shared many happy moments and conversations at C&L, PwC and IBM. He left us too soon some time ago and has been missed.

Jeremy and I were partners in PwC and worked together for a number of years. He was an excellent consultant well respected by clients and staff. He was very knowledgeable in his field. In later years after our retirements we became good friends and played golf together quite regularly. He will be greatly missed.

What a droll sense of humour did Jeremy have. What a pleasure it was to avail of his IT consulting skills as we lesser skilled auditors went about our tasks. He was never one to to give a simple answer, but always gave thoughtful direction that made our job easier.

Have fond memories of our many years together at C&L/PwC, and his at times of-the-wall Monty Pythonesque asides.

Rest easy Jeremy.

I met Jeremy in the late 90's when PW merged with C&L, I found him to be always warm and friendly, and I worked collaboratively with him on a number of clients. He was always very professional and knowledgeable in his subject matter. He will be missed.
