It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth, 89, on Saturday, May 27, 2023 in Guelph, Ontario. After a short battle with cancer, she departed peacefully, with her children at her side.
Born on September 9, 1933 in Castlegore, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, Elizabeth Praamsma (nee Faulkner) was the daughter of Robert Faulkner and Dorien McAfee. She was a beloved member of the family in which she grew up, which besides her mother and father included her grandmother Elizabeth Jane McAfee, her Uncle Freddie (McAfee), her step-father, Aelfryn Ernest Jones (Ivor) and her brother Robert Henry Faulkner (Harry).
Deeply loved by her family, she is survived by her children Naomi (Franck Portalupi) and Andrew (Barry Praamsma-Townshend) and grandchildren May and Molly Henderson and nieces Lynne Lukas (Mark) and Anne Faulkner. Over many decades, many are the friends who brought meaning to her days and whose lives she touched in return.
Elizabeth had a strong, adventurous spirit that guided her with her family as they crossed the Atlantic to begin new lives in Canada, first in New Brunswick in 1954 and later in Montreal. She treasured her memories of early years working for a shipping company in New York City as well as out on the prairies in Saskatchewan for her first charge as a student minister. She was a trail blazer as one of the first women in ministry with the United Church of Canada. After she was ordained, she first worked at a two point charge in Riceville and Pendleton in the Ottawa area and then moved on to Queenswood United in Orleans. Her longest service was in Kitchener at Highland Road United followed by time in Bobcaygeon at Trinity United. In retirement, she served at a number of churches in the Cobourg area as an interim pastor.
A small funeral service to celebrate Elizabeth's life will be held on Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at Gilbert MacIntyre and Son Funeral Home, 252 Dublin St. N., Guelph, Ontario. Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation at 10 o'clock before the service that starts at 11:30 a.m. Interment to follow at Woodland Cemetery, Kitchener. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice Wellington in memory of Elizabeth Praamsma. We thank them for the tremendous care and comfort they brought to her and to us, her family, in these recent days.
We love you, Mom! Rest in peace!
"I wouldn't change any of my life, even the pain-filled parts, for the darkest times were tunnels through immovable mountains to bright new places." —Elizabeth
