1929 – 2025
Alice Siemens, a devoted teacher and lifelong learner, died peacefully in the soft light of an October afternoon in 2025 after a long illness, which she faced with grace and resolve.
Born in Wembley, Alberta, in 1929, Alice grew up in a Mennonite farming family that eventually settled in southern British Columbia. Her childhood stories, filled with warmth and hard work, became part of family lore. Encouraged by her grandfather to follow her dreams.
Teaching was her calling from an early age. After graduating from the Mennonite Educational Institute in Abbotsford and completing teacher training, she taught in one-room schools in Newfoundland and the Peace River District, later in various schools in Metro Vancouver. She continued her studies in the summers at UBC and UC Berkeley and retired at 63, remembered fondly by many students and colleagues.
In 1960, she married Alfred, a geographer. Together they raised three children. Her faith evolved into a gentle, questioning spirituality, and she remained a steady, loving presence-patient, wise, and practical in all family matters.
Beyond teaching and family, Alice found joy in travel, gardening, reading, and creative pursuits such as cooking, sewing, and flower arranging, all marked by her distinctive flair.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 65 years, Alfred; their children Yvonne (Allen), Barbara (Anthony), and Howard (Heike); grandchildren Gavin, Cleo, Julian, Katja, and Beckett; and siblings Amanda and Bill. She was predeceased by her brother Walter.
The family thanks the compassionate team at Amica Lions Gate for their care.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Boal Chapel in North Vancouver on Monday, December 8, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the BC Cancer Foundation are welcome.
