Arnaldo Ismay Obituary
On December 13, 2024, our dear husband, dad, and abuelo, Arnaldo Andrés Ismay, passed away from this life to be with his eternal Father at the age of 78 years.
Arnaldo was born the eldest of five children to Walter Ismay and Elizabeth Johnston Ismay in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Arnaldo lived his early years in La Rioja, where his parents were Christian Missionaries. After completing high school, Arnaldo went to Córdoba, where he graduated as a metallurgical engineer from Universidad Tecnológica Nacional in 1973.
Arnaldo met his wife Mirtha in Córdoba while both were in university, and they were married in 1973. That same year, they travelled to Vancouver, Canada, for Arnaldo to earn his Masters in Applied Sciences at UBC in 1976. Arnaldo worked his whole career in the mining industry, for many years as a researcher, executive and consultant, retiring in 2008 from Ausenco as President of Americas.
Arnaldo will be missed by his loving wife of 51 years, Mirtha; his children, Wenda (Dave), Marissa (Jordan) and David (Ashley); his eight cherished grandchildren, Alisha, Ethan, Riley, Cole, Ari, Leo, Hannah and Jay; his siblings, Flora, Lorraine, Irene, Norman; and many nieces, nephews and extended family in Argentina and the US.
Arnaldo is remembered for his devotion to family and friends, his kindness and warmth, and his playful sense of humour. He was happiest when spending time with his family, especially with his grandchildren. From a young age, Arnaldo enjoyed hiking the mountains of Argentina. He continued to pursue this interest until recently, exploring trails on the North Shore and throughout British Columbia with Mirtha, and often with his children and grandchildren. Arnaldo also loved travelling to other countries and experienced many cultures since his early youth. As an expression of his Christian faith, Arnaldo volunteered for many years with several charities.
The family expresses gratitude and appreciation to the friends and family who have offered endless support over the past five months while Arnaldo remained in hospital.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Union Gospel Mission or M2W2, two organizations where Arnaldo volunteered. To honour his memory, a celebration of Arnaldo's life will be planned at a later date.
