CHIA-CHENG SUN Obituary

Feb 9, 1928 - Apr 16, 2013

The family is tremendously saddened to announce that C.C. Sun, their beloved husband, father, and grandfather, has peacefully passed away. Survived by his devoted wife Kay, daughter Kathleen (Stephen), son Grant (Kathy), and son Mark (Nadine). Also survived by 10 grandchildren of whom he was very proud; Elizabeth, Alexander, Kevin, and Douglas Holliday; Nicholas and Sidonie Sun; Rigel, Skylar, Triton, and Jag Sun. C.C. arrived in Canada from China in 1948 as a young man of 19. Best known for opening the Jade Palace in Chinatown and later, Capilano Heights in North Vancouver, which has endured for 41 years. C.C. was a phenomenal tennis player, talented er-hu musician, and loved his roses and peonies greatly. C.C. was well-loved, admired, and highly respected by many and will be greatly missed. His spirit, however, is now set free to be with the dragons. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later time - please contact the family at [email protected] for details. May this proud and wonderful man forever rest in peace.

Bye, Dad.

To The Sun Family, We, The Brun Family, have enjoyed so, so many wonderful lunches, dinners, celebrations of every kind at your father's,grandfather's restaurant. His warm , friendly welcomes always made us feel so "special". He was particularly gracious to our son, Alexander, as he grew from toddler to teenager. It is testament to his fine character that the staff we have known for 30 years is still there! He used to lament that his children were no help in the restaurant as they had pursued careers in medicine! Of course he was so incredibly proud of his children and grandchildren as we know they are of him. What a success he has made of his life and the futures of his progeny. We shall always think of Mr. Sun with the warmest, heartfelt memories. It truly was a life well lived. Paul, Sandy and Alexander Brun

Mr. Sun was always a gracious and smiling host. I recall going in to pick up a menu before lunch opening. The door was open, so went in search of some one. I was entranced to hear the er-hu being played. I am embarassed to say that I stood out of sight just to listen for quite some time. As I put my head around the open doorway I saw C.C. sitting at his desk. What a talent he had for the traditional music. I have often told this story to others and will always remember that special moment and will keep it with me.

Fly high and proud,

My family and I have had many memorable celebrations at CC's restaurant. It was a place we always enjoyed going to for special dinners. CC and his entire family always made us feel welcome and the food is the best in the province. We have always had great respect for this family and their successful business. We will miss you terribly but will continue to enjoy what you have built. Definitely a landmark on the North Shore.
Heaven will now be an even better place with you there.
Our condolences to all.

We lived just across the street from the Capilano Heights restaurant and recall the very day that Mr. Sun opened up this great dining establishment. We got to know Mr. Sun and truly he was a kind man and we always enjoyed his friendly greeting the many times we dined there. We will remember Mr. Sun with very pleasant thoughts.

My deepest sympathies to you all. I have such wonderful childhood memories of Big Uncle CC and his restaurant, special family occasions, swimming in his pool and playing at nearby Capilano Park. Rest in peace, Uncle.

I will always remember you as very hard-working, kind and generous.
In addition to your musical abilities, your artistic talents – drawing especially – were extraordinary.
I also remember your photography and darkroom work when you lived with us as a young man. Perhaps that inspired my own interest in photography.
Rest in peace. I will miss you, Uncle CC.
