David Russell Obituary

Dave passed away after being well cared for by the Palliative team at St. Paul's Hospital and as always, Judy, who was by his side for more than 50 years. He was the best dad ever to Carrie and Lori and took it to the next level as Grampy to Sydney and Ayla.

Dad loved people and the interactions he had in all of the places he worked from the early days of Eatons, to the thousands of miles travelled throughout BC and Alberta in the building supply world, to his retirement career at the Practical Kitchen in Vernon. At 6'6'' he was the much loved Big Dave to all those he met.

Dad was a doer with little hesitation of taking on a new project/challenge be it a business opportunity, a major renovation or some recipe he was trying to perfect. Dad always had something getting him out of bed early.

He never really greyed and always had a young spirit. Seeking out the perfect graphic t-shirt that he would eventually spill mustard on, finding a new pair of bright-coloured runners or tasting a great burger remained a passion to the end.

He was the ultimate 'girl-dad' to Carrie and Lori and proud Grampy to Sydney and Ayla. The many subtle and not so subtle lessons he taught will be remembered forever. Although they didn't always agree on which teams to support, Stuart and Omer will miss the spirited conversations with Dad about hockey and soccer, often over a plate of his special ribs.

Dad enjoyed spending his remaining days with family and saying goodbye to many good friends - including Coke and salt from whom he had been estranged for a while.

Thank you to all the kind nurses and doctors who kept Dad with us as long as they did. He experienced the full gamut of what the medical system had to offer and we continue to be so grateful for everyone who has dedicated themselves to those professions.

Per his wishes, there will not be a service, but memories can be shared with our family at [email protected]

I have personally known Dave for many years and was very fond of this gentle giant. He was well known in the Building Supply Industry as "Lurch"....not sure why to this date but it suited him.
Dave and I played a few golf rounds in BSIA golf events and of course one of our favorite social events the Bocce tournament.
To Judy, Carrie and Lori my sincere condolences to your loss.
