Mr. Cuthbertson taught us math in Grade 11 and 12 at West Van High. He introduced us to calculus, which became like a second language to me and encouraged me to study sciences at UBC. My condolences to his family - he must have been the most interesting husband, father and grandfather.

A wonderful teacher and kind man. I babysat his children many, many years ago and remember him as someone who embraced life and was always cheerful. RIP Mr. Cuthbertson

Mr. Cuthbertson provided us with so many indelible memories from the WVOC, one that I still remember with deep fear is driving the Citroen back from Singing Pass (I did NOT want to mess up that awesome car). I believe my parent's car had a problem, but I cannot remember why Mr Cuthbertson stayed and I drove that car (packed with fellow WVOCs) back to West Van. He provided an invaluable entrance to so many places of sublime beauty in the outdoors (and Morag for the second grade overnights to Hollyburn).
On top of all that, he helped me become quite adept at getting to that QED in maths.
My condolences the family.

I met John through North Shore Hikers and have gone on many hikes and bike rides with him over the years. I was also lucky to have been invited to join his group of friends for Christmas and other social get togethers. John had so many wonderful stories and encouraged
me to have travel adventures. Over the years I have travelled to some of the places of John’s stories and I would think of him. My condolences to his family. - how lucky we all were to have known him.

I met John shortly after joining the North Shore Hikers in 1981. John was great company on many hikes, backpacks and cycle trips over the course of about 25 years. We discussed an immense variety of topics as we journeyed along and I thank him for his friendship, love, concern and advice. A close-knit group of members got together for birthdays and Christmases and here we are sporting a T-shirt that one of us gave to the others as a present. God bless and look after you John.

Mr. Cuthbertson taught me math at WVSS in 1968; he was endlessly patient and good humoured with us all. Math was not my subject, but I learned to enjoy geometry under his tutelage. I remember too his soothing Scottish accent, the twinkle in his eye, and how he was out in all weathers striding about the fields in his elegant tweed overcoat, helping the sports teams. Rest in peace, Mr. C!

Mr Cuthbertson was absolutely one of my favourite teachers. He made ‘proof’ fun and made me feel I was much better at math than I actually was. He was also just a really nice person. A real gentleman. My real condolences to his family.

I was a friend of the family many many years ago. I remember John as always reading and indulging us young girls in all our shenanigans.
He was a silent and yet kind man to me.. and I always remember him and Morag fondly.
My condolences to you all.
You were so lucky to have him on this earth for as long as you did . Now he is watching from above.

Certainly one of those teachers who leave an imprint...I loved his class and I loved math because of the way he presented it. I will never forget, however, the look of horror on his face when I told him I was pursuing a career in design as opposed to mathematics! He would have hopefully been pleased at the final outcome when I did end up taking a math course during grad school. Mr. Cuthbertson, you gave me a gift and for that I am truly grateful. Thank you so much!

Mr.C. challenged one to exceed their grasp in very innovative and friendly ways.
A true champion of a teacher and mentor.
Also a good neighbour on Greenleaf.

John was such a huge inspiration as the sponsor of the Outdoor Club at WVSS. He taught us to love the out-of-doors and all the adventures waiting there for us. Forever grateful for your generous gift of your time.

I remember John as my best math teacher during my high school years at WVSS. Pushed me hard, to learn the magic of geometry, which continues to prove useful in many everyday tasks. Sorry for your loss.
