John Sims Obituary

John Mark, FCA Sims September 14, 1947 - January 10, 2014 John (Pops) passed away peacefully at home on Friday, January 10, 2014 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

He leaves behind Barbara, his devoted wife of 41 years, daughter Kirsten McElgunn (Ryan), son Stephen Sims (Chessa) and daughter Lauren Richet (Ben). John is survived by his grandchildren, the loveable and lively Isabel McElgunn, sweet baby Ophelia Sims and was looking forward with great joy and anticipation to the birth of Lauren and Ben's baby. John's greatest sorrow was that he would not be here to watch his grandchildren grow. He also leaves behind his sister Laurie Chase and her husband David, his mother-in-law, Hope Baker, brothers-in-law Bob, Peter and Ken, sisters-in-law Judy, Pat and Robyn and his much loved nieces and nephews. He will be missed by his four-legged companion Ghillie. Over the years, John became "Pops" to many of his children's friends and he cherished those relationships. You are unnamed here but you know who you are!

John was a graduate of St. Thomas More Collegiate and a charter student at SFU in Economics. A distinguished Chartered Accountant, John has long set an example of strong community service (Board of the Archdiocese of Vancouver; St. Pius X Parish Council; BC Centre for Ability; Wildlife Rescue and Special Olympics BC). In 1999, the Institute of Chartered Accountants named him CA of the Year in recognition of his community service and he was elected a Fellow of the ICABC in 2004 in recognition of his service and the honour he brought to the accounting profession. John articled with Wolridge Mahon, CAs before joining the chartered accounting firm of Ellis Foster where he spent many years as a partner. He then joined the accounting firm of Ernst & Young as Executive Director and retired as a partner at Manning Elliott Chartered Accountants. John was a mentor to many young professionals and took great pride in their growth and success.

A sports enthusiast and a die-hard Canucks and BC Lions supporter, John played hockey, tennis, some questionable golf and was an avid fisherman. Countless hours were spent coaching and supporting his children's sports and endeavours. Some of his happiest times were spent fishing with his friends and family on the Cowichan River, around Quadra Island, Pennask Lake, Rivers Inlet and many other locations. He treasured the time spent at his recreational property near Maple Bay on Vancouver Island and at Taku Resort on Quadra.

We will be forever grateful to Dr. Christopher Ryan, Dr. Peter Edmonds, Sandra, the RNs and the Home Support team during John's final months.

Prayers will be offered at 7:00 pm on Friday, January 17th at St. Pius X Church, 1150 Mt Seymour Road in North Vancouver; followed by Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, January 18th at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the John M. Sims Fund in support of Special Olympics British Columbia or a charity of your choice.

Our polis mourns the death of this citizen. A model of Roman dignitas and civic virtue, John was a constant moral compass. At the old Y, we sometimes joshed if he might be wearing the toga of Cincinnatus on this day; said he wouldn't give up the fishing-rod or the plow. Farewell,
