Mary Romanko Obituary

It is with deep sadness that the family of Mary Romanko announces her passing peacefully at her home in West Vancouver on May 9, 2021, at the age of 91 years. Mary is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Catherine (Floyd) and Patricia (Byron); granddaughter, Alexandra (Aoife); step-grandson, Justin (Rheanna); step-great-grandson, Roman; brother, Dr. Ivan Hrabowsky; and many nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by Julian Romanko Q.C., her loving husband of 31 years; and her dear brothers, Walter Hrabowsky and Myron Hrabowsky.
Mary was born in Toronto to Nestor and Clementia Hrabowsky who instilled in her a deep love and respect for family and her Ukrainian heritage. Mary lived much of her life in Toronto where she raised her family and worked at the University of Toronto Robarts Library. Mary and Julian and their large group of friends enjoyed going to symphony concerts, the opera and theatre performances, particularly at the Shaw and Stratford Festivals.
After the passing of Julian, it was the birth of her granddaughter in Vancouver that brought Mary to the west coast where she happily lived the rest of her years in West Vancouver near her daughters and their families. Mary made her family and her many friends the focus of her life and had a special place in her heart for her granddaughter whom she took every opportunity to spoil with great delight.
Mary will be remembered for her sharp mind, her sense of humour, her great culinary skills, and her youthful spirit. She was gracious, loving and generous and had a way of making everyone she met feel valued and special.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date once current restrictions are lifted. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the West Vancouver Seniors' Activity Centre or to St. Vladimir's Institute, Toronto.

Dear Patty and Cathy,

I went online to try to reconnect with your family and saw that your mother had passed away. I'm so sorry to hear of her passing.

You were all such an important part of my life. I remember the laughter whenever your mother was around. She was my mother's best friend and no matter what was happening, your mother provided a comic perspective.

I have so many pictures of you (Patty and Cathy), your dad and your mother and would love to share them. It was always in the back of my mind to reconnect with you. I'm so sorry it's too late to see your mother again.

I hope that we can get in touch in the future.

With love,
Daria

Dear Catherine & Patricia,
I am saddened to read of the loss of your dear Mother. The last I saw and spoke with your Mother was close to her retirement, she mentioned she would be moving out west to be close to her daughters. I lived in Lambton Square and we would meet up on the bus, on Bloor Street or in the credit union. Your Father and mine (Nykola Romanko) were related. I remember your Father well--he finalized my condo purchase in Lambton Square. Please accept my most sincere condolences. May the many wonderful memories you so cherish of your Mother enrich and lighten your hearts and may your Mother's passing bring you peace knowing your Mother has once more joined hand-in-hand with your Father!
Respectfully, Olesia Romanko, Toronto ON
