Mervyn DUGGAN Obituary

DUGGAN, Mervyn John March 3, 1934 - March 4, 2018 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Dad passed away on March 4, 2018 after a courageous three year battle with cancer. Dad was one of a kind. His humour and laughter lit up a room. He was once described as the definition of kindness and a true gentleman. If you did not know dad, once you met him, you knew you had a forever friend. He made everyone feel special. His larger than life love was for family first, then the sport he loved so dearly, hockey, but we all knew not to call him during a Canuck's game. Sunday night dinners were his favourite. He would sit at the head of the table and shoot the breeze with a cold beer in his hand. Dad was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Marlean in 2007 and his daughter, Lynn in 1993. He is survived by his children and grandchildren; Kim (Ralph), Cheryl, Julie, Brad (Rosa), Justin, Alison, Brendan and Cindy; as well as his four remaining siblings, Jim, Marie, Barb, Jack and their spouses. His loss is also felt profoundly by his extended family in Eastern Canada. The family sends heartfelt thanks to Dr. A. Avanessian for his kindness and care and for giving us the past three years with our dad. As well, a special thanks to Karen and Julie, his chemo nurses, for making his treatments bearable. He actually looked forward to seeing them and keep the two of them on their toes. Finally, to Dr. I. Hughan and Craig, we are forever grateful for your outstanding care of dad over the years, as well as for the kindness you showed to our family during his final days. A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at the Seymour Golf and Country Club on Mt. Seymour Parkway, North Vancouver from 1:00-4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation or the BC Cancer Agency.

I won't forget all your advice Merv...(Or should I call you Vern)? the first time we met, I was on Cheryl's roof cleaning our gutters... you had a few words for me that day, and those words turned into advice about my lawn and gardens for years to come. You should see the gardens now Merv, you'd be proud... and especially proud of Cheryl's since part of you is here now... With every new blade of grass and with every new bloom, I will remember you and your cheer and your ice cold beer. Condolences to the family, for the loss of a man unlike others, befriended everyone he came into contact with. See you again Vern... xo love Blondie...

( I called him Vern and he never corrected me... he called me blondie and I never corrected him.... I don't even know if we really knew each others real name, even years later) PS... I have their back around here xo PPS... next time I am in BBAY, I will go by the legion and have one for you xo

My deepest condolences to all of you, Merv's family and friends. I just learned of his passing (two months later), but I am grateful to see the Celebration of Life is ahead, a date I can make. It is a beautiful obituary. Merv was very kind, good-humoured and sweet. We served as volunteers in CAVEAT together. I will let some of our old CAVEAT colleagues know about the celebration of life for Merv. Bless you all. Bentley Doyle

Our sincere condolences to the Duggan family. Our fondest memories will be the time when we traveled together on the Danube Cruise and got to know him as a true gentlemen and shared lots of laughter, jokes and enjoying German Beer together.

I have known Merv for 80 years. He was a great friend and although we lost track of each other from time to time, we always seemed to find each other again. He was a great Father and his children and family will miss him. I treasure the great times we had together in Rexdale, Vancouver and Palm Desert and will never forget his handsome face, RIP

It was with profound sadness that I learned of the passing of my good friend, mentor and colleague Merv Duggan. Merv was an inspiration to many of us who worked for him during his time with GSW and Camco and I am proud to have been a part of his life both professionally and personally for the past 45 years. His dedication to work was only surpassed by his dedication to family again setting an important example to us all. You will be greatly missed my friend.

To Merv's Family:
It's always difficult to know what to say at a time like the, but I just wanted you to know you are in my thoughts and prayers as you deal with this huge loss. Your Dad was one of the BEST - he was the essence of kindness, a consummate professional and a true friend and colleague. I will miss his emails and his wonderful sense of humour. I have lots of great memories of him through the years..
Hugs to you all,
Rhonda G
