Ovanes STAMBOLIAN Obituary

Our dear Nicky passed away on May 20 in North Vancouver, aged 92. He leaves Elena, his loving wife of 64 years, his son Sergiu, daughter-in-law Helen, granddaughters Sonia and Ester, brother Garbis, cousin Sergiu, and many friends and colleagues.

Nicky was born in 1924 in Constanta, Romania, of Armenian parents Acabi and Magardici Stambolian. He faced many hardships in life, including the aftermath of the Armenian genocide, war, food shortages, earthquakes, and the communist dictatorship. Still, he was lucky enough in 1953 to marry the beautiful, talented, and hard-working Elena. He also had the rare good fortune to combine his passion with his career, working as a mountain guide for over 50 years. He organized and led thousands of hiking, climbing, skiing and cultural trips for guests from many countries and from all walks of life. Throughout Romania, Nicky was known as "Regele Muntilor" (King of the Mountains).

Nicky and Elena immigrated to Canada in 2000, where they have enjoyed a deep and reciprocated devotion with their granddaughters Sonia and Ester.

The family would like to thank Dr Catharine Dewar for many years of attentive care, and the staff at North Shore Hospice and Lions Gate Hospital 4 East for their exceptional kindness during Nicky's last weeks.
