Peter TRASK Obituary

TRASK, Peter Barrie June 29, 1942 - July 24, 2021 Retired Vancouver Sun reporter and editor Peter Trask, revered by colleagues for his great sense of humour, has died in North Vancouver at the age of 79. Peter and his wife Dorothy were both junior reporters in Chester, England, before coming to Canada a year after their marriage in 1966. In British Columbia, Peter worked briefly as a journalist for the Penticton Herald, before moving to the Lower Mainland. He then joined Canadian Press before finding work at The Vancouver Sun, where he remained for the next 39 years until his retirement in 2007. Peter will be remembered for his great sense of humour, along with his love of travelling, taking cruises and fine dining - which he would insist included (perhaps tongue-in-cheek) the traditional English dish of "egg, chips and peas." Born on June 29, 1942 in Doncaster, Yorkshire, Northern England. He was the only child of the late Frank and Barbara Trask, and grew up in Wrexham, North Wales. Peter began his career as a journalist in Stoke-on-Trent before joining the weekly Cheshire Observer. Working in Chester, England, he met his future wife, Dorothy, a reporter for the rival Chester Chronicle, when the two were comparing notes while covering the funeral of some local celebrity, whose name has been long forgotten. Peter and Dorothy grew attached while trading names of attendees like field marshals, brigadier-generals and vice admirals, and tied the knot in 1966, emigrating to Canada the following year. Sharing a passion for travel, Peter and Dorothy visited nearly 50 countries, listing Greece, Egypt and Chile as among their favourite destinations. Peter spent many retirement years volunteering at Meals on Wheels, where he delivered meals each week and always enjoyed chatting to his customers. "He was a great, hilarious guy, so much fun to be with and I'll miss him terribly," said former Province reporter and life-long friend John Griffiths. Peter is survived by his loving wife Dorothy, son Michael, daughter Helen (David), and grandsons Graeme, Curtis and Liam. The family wishes to thank all the caring staff at Lions Gate Hospital for all the support they provided. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation. https://lghfoundation.com/

Peter and Dorothy were very good friends of my parents, both bringing up young families in the Blueridge area. I remember the Trasks driving my sister and me to swimming lessons at Ron Andrews and their bridge night parties at our house where, if I was lucky, some party treats were still on the table when I woke up the next morning.

After my father passed away, they became even more important friends to my mother. My Mom thoroughly enjoyed her times with Peter and Dorothy discussing politics, playing cards, witty banter, laughing, and, of course but only occasionally, complaining about their children.

I will raise my glass to remember a gentleman who lived life well, and with much kindness and good humour.

The Martin family sends its sympathies to the Trask family.

Miss you already Peter. You were always so cheerful and straight talking, brightening everybody's lives by somehow being funny and sensible at the same time. An irreplaceable friend.
