Rene HAIST Obituary
We are saddened to announce the passing of our wonderful mother, grandmother and knowledge keeper Rene Haist on October 8, 2017. She leaves behind her children Yvonne (David), Ralph (Shirley), Vivian and Tom (Sally) and adoring grandchildren Zoë, Michelle (Ryan), David (Katie), Mischa (Ian) and Stephanie.
As a young woman in her early twenties and always the adventurer, Rene courageously immigrated to Canada from Germany with her new husband Fred. Though leaving behind a closely-knit extended family, her commitment to kinship ties found expression in new ways- to her offspring and their offspring and as the neighbourhood matriarch to other families. Although fiercely independent, she liked nothing better than to have family around her. Nobody could ever figure out the secret ingredient in the salad dressing. And those cakes!
Rene instilled in her family a sense of wonder at the beauty and diversity of this world. She made it her business to keep abreast of world affairs, always keen to discuss current events. Her passion for gardening, her adeptness at home making and community building and her wise business sense kept her strongly engaged until the final months of her well-lived life. Well into her 80's Rene kept physically fit and many have remarked that she was a role model for aging gracefully.
Rene could laugh easily and expressed a great sense of playfulness. Her adventurous spirit translated to travel throughout the world and her inquisitiveness about how lives come to be lived gave rise to wonderful stories. Rene was a teacher in generosity and compassion; she envisioned a world that reflected justice.
We cannot imagine our world without Omi. Much thanks to neighbours John and Jane, her caregivers with special thanks to Didi and the wonderful staff in 7E at Lions Gate Hospital.
