It is with deep regret and sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Richard (Rick) Douglas Garvin in Vernon BC on January 6, 2016. Richard was a much loved Professor of Anthropology & Archeology at University of British Columbia Okanagan where his quick smile, laughter, keen insight and compassion will be deeply missed.
Richard was born in Vancouver and spent most of his childhood in the District of North Vancouver where he attended Seymour Heights Elementary School and Windsor Secondary. After several years of work and travel Richard completed a BA in Archeology at Simon Fraser University in 1984, followed by an MA in Taphonic Archeology in 1988 and a PhD in Environmental Archeology in 1994, both from University of Calgary.
Since 2000 Richard has been a professor at UBCO. He is well known for his work with the local Coroner's office and with First Nations communities in the Okanagan and BC's West Coast. He also maintained active research program in Mexico.
Richard is survived by his partner Marcela Benitez of Juanchita, Mexico; his parents Doug & Donna Garvin of Chilliwack, BC; and his siblings Lyn (Wayne) of Edmonton, AB; Terri of Edmonton, AB; and Bruce (Irene)of Delta, BC. He will be much missed by his nieces and nephews Danielle & Nicole Parker, Kyle & Keith Garvin, and Carter & Everett Denman; as well as his extended Mexican family Amineh, Mario, Talia, Pablo, Paulina and Rebeca.
A gathering to celebrate Richard's life will take place on Saturday February 13, 2016 at the Schubert Centre, 3505 - 30th Avenue, Vernon, BC from 2:00-4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Dr. Richard Garvin Memorial Fund at UBC Okanagan c/o the Development Office, 1138 Alumni Avenue, Kelowna BC, V1V 1V7.
