William Phillips Obituary

Explorer

Born and raised in North Vancouver, Bil lived an exceptional life of compassion and adventure that led him to the highest levels of achievement in many pursuits. He was an accomplished drummer, a meticulous craftsman, and a caring animal-lover. But ultimately Bil became a world-renowned cave diver whose decades-long exploration of the water-filled caves of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula resulted in his induction into the Explorers Club of New York. This achievement officially placed Bil in the pantheon of the world's greatest undersea explorers, mountain climbers, astronauts and more. It is an honour reserved for few and one Bil accepted with his characteristic humility and good humour, never taking himself too seriously and always ready with a helping hand or words of encouragement for the many who sought his advice.

Bil stayed in touch with his family and many friends in Vancouver over the years. Ultimately, he adopted the Yucatan city of Tulum as home and base for his exploration, dive business and teaching There, he was loved, trusted and admired by all who knew him - other ex-pats and Mexicans alike. He was a consistent and respected advocate of initiatives to make cave diving safer, to preserve the underwater environment, and to inform and educate through his collaborations with the National Geographic Society and others. His death leaves a gap in the local community that will be very difficult to fill.

Bil was predeceased by his Mom, Catherine Eleanor Wheatley. He is survived by his partner in life, Sabine Schnittger, dad Harry Phillips Sr., step mom Lenora, brother Harry, sister in law Gina Lauria, step siblings Ron, Dave, Rick, Liz and Jeff Blore and their families, many cousins, nieces and nephews, and closest friends and confidantes Sandy White and Jane Morrison.

A Celebration of Life with food and drink is planned for Bil's birthday, January 5, 2018 at 1:00PM at the Canadian Legion #114, 1630 Lynn Valley Road, North Vancouver.

I googled Bil as I went through gear tonight. Sad. He had lots more to do. A lovely man.
I met Bil winter of `90 at Capilano Divers in North Vancouver when he taught me Advanced Open Water in Lions Bay. I´ll never forget his reaction time- he grabbed me at ~100´ as I began to fall from 80´ during our classes´ first deep dive. He immediately inflated my flat BCD. Saved my life. RIP, Bil.

Hard to out in to words who Bil was. If you know him, then you understand. If not, then you missed out on a beautiful soul. I met him at the De Rosa's. Took a re breather course from him. Then dove with him many times. Whenever I look back, I always think he kept me alive with his meticulous, stubborn and patient detail. I have so many memories, and I think of him often. Bil, you are missed.

January 27th, 2018 sitting by myself and having a coffee, I decided to google my old friend and see how he was doing. I was so sad to learn of Bil's passing, the passing of a great man. Bil was my instructor, mentor and friend. I really only knew Bil for a few years, before he went on to bigger adventures, but quite simply, he changed my life. Bil taught me the most important aspects of being an instructor and he led by example. I will always consider him to be one of the most important mentors in my life. My most sincere condolences to all of his family and friends.

To honor my dearest double cousin Bil I will mindfully attempt to carry forward his kindness, raw honesty, fearlessness and endearing Smile. His humble modesty and heart of gold I attempt to wear with pride. This is no small feat, but it was Who Bil was. Love you Bil

A life to admire. He lived his dream and showed others that it could be their dream if they wanted it. Well done Bil.
