Broughton, Alex: We are devastated to share that our beloved son and brother, Alex Broughton, 42, passed away unexpectedly on February 8, 2026, in Arviat, Nunavut. He will be deeply missed by family, friends, musicians, students, and his community. Alex was born in 1983 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and later lived in Kelowna, B.C. He grew up with a deep love of music that would shape the course of his life. As a teenager, he immersed himself in punk and ska. Later he developed a profound appreciation for flamenco music, dedicating a great part of his life to learning this musical style, even studying remotely with a flamenco guitar master in Spain. Alex moved to Arviat in 2025 and quickly found his spot in the community. Here he was made to feel at home and free to be himself. He loved the people, environment, and way of life. Alex held a teaching position at the high school where he taught math, science, and, not least, guitar. He was a passionate and talented educator, ensuring all students were seen and supported. Alex loved people, the spiciest food possible, racquet sports, board games, hiking, swimming, and nature. He had a competitive spirit and brought energy into whatever he did. His raucous laugh, sense of humour, and gigantic smile will be remembered by all who knew him. Alex leaves behind his parents Cathy and Ross, siblings Graham, Jillian (Josh), and Colin (Maria), partner Rebecca, friend and musical partner Ibriam, and friend Brandon. There will be a Celebration of Life held for Alex on Saturday the 21st of February from 2 4pm at the Kelowna Unitarians Church, 1310 Bertram St. In lieu of flowers, we will have a donation box for Alex's high school where you may contribute cash, cheque, or e-transfer if you wish. E-transfers in honour of Alex may be sent to
