Allan Burget Obituary

Burget, Allan Sidney "Sid": March 7, 1932 - February 14, 2025 It is perhaps the ultimate tribute to a 71-year romance that Allan Sidney "Sid" Burget passed away peacefully on Valentine's Day, 2025, at Kelowna General Hospital. A man of boundless energy, curiosity, and a dry, lightning-fast wit, Sid leaves behind a legacy as wide-ranging as the airplanes and garden beds he built. Born in Winnipeg on March 7, 1932 , Sid's life was defined by a restless entrepreneurial spirit and a knack for mastering almost any trade he touched. After marrying his beloved wife, Shirley Jane (nee Kennedy), on November 19, 1954, the couple began a journey that took them from the prairies to Vancouver in 1971, and finally to their "Lambert Plantation" on the Westbench in Penticton in 1979. Sid was a true Renaissance man. His career was a story of ambition: he was a miner, a home builder, a realtor, and an appraiser, with colorful chapters as a beachcomber and crab fisherman in between. Though he retired from the Federal Government in 1993, "retirement" was merely a new phase for a man who spent many days in his famous workshop. A private pilot who didn't just fly planes but built them, Sid was also a motorcycle enthusiast, a talented inventor, and a gold prospector who shared his expertise as the publisher of the book "Gold Trails". His curiosity and creative drive served as a deep inspiration to his family. Beyond his technical skills, Sid was known for his sharp mind and even sharper tongue (in the best possible way). He was always armed with a one-liner or a perfectly timed quip that could stop a conversation or start a laugh. While not a social butterfly by nature, his sincerity and humor earned him a wide circle of lifelong friends. His wit served him well during his 60 years as Freemason and one term as Worshipful Master of Penticton Lodge No 147 and his time as President of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 4281. He was also a mainstay in the Winnipeg and Penticton Flying Clubs and the Wheel-N-Stars Square Dancers. His greatest pride, however, was his family. Sid is survived by his wife, Shirley, whose "sainthood" was frequently the subject of his affectionate teasing; his sons, Douglas (Nancy) and John (Beth) of Kelowna; and his three cherished granddaughters, Laura (Chris), Claire (Cody), and Julia. Though they lived at a distance, the girls' summers were defined by the "Plantation"- weeks spent on the covered deck, in the pool, and embarking on adventures with a grandfather who always made life interesting. He also leaves behind his brothers Armand, Roger, and Charles (Deb), along with several nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents, Edouard and Angelina, his brother Peter, and sisters Lucille, Gloria, and Claudette. A private interment was held at Lakeview Cemetery in Penticton. The family looks forward to welcoming friends and extended family to a Celebration of Sid's Life at Everden Rust Funeral Home in Penticton on June 12th at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Sid may be directed to The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation at supportthepmcf.ca/Memory or by calling 416-946-6560. He lived a life without idle moments, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
