Ernst Oslender Obituary

Oslender, Ernst Egon: Beloved husband of Agnes, passed away at Cottonwoods on June 9, 2015 at the age of 87. Ernst is survived by his loving wife, Agnes, his step children and their spouses, Wolf and Julie Krieg, Maria Krieg and Irwin Griffith, Petra and Thor Ewalds, and Antoinette and Berndt Meyer, as well as his grandchildren Miriam, Michelle, Timo, Melina, and Colin, with their spouses and four great grandchildren. In Germany he leaves behind two sisters, Rosemarie and Monica, and five nieces and nephews with families.  Ernst grew up in Uerdingen, by Krefeld, Germany. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and Frankfurt. For many years Ernst created altars, doors and other memorabilia for churches. As an accomplished sculptor he established a home gallery in Solingen, Germany, together with his new wife and business partner, Agnes. In Solingen he created many of his stone and brass sculptures which followed him to Canada. In 1980 Ernst and Agnes moved to Canada. They settled in Edmonton, and 12 years later moved to Okanagan Centre in Lake Country. In Canada Ernst developed the skill of making Scrimshaw, that gave him international recognition.  He also developed a love for photography which became his major hobby in the later years. In the late 1980's Ernst started developing computer skills when he was already in his early 60's after Wolf gave him a computer to play with. His interest in the newest technology kept Ernst young at heart. Ernst's primal therapy sessions made a huge difference to many, many people. He had clients from around the world including South Africa, Japan, England, Germany and Switzerland. Ernst was an active member at the St. Edward's Parish in Lake Country. In the last few years, Ernst spent much of his time taking care to his wife Agnes who suffered from dementia. Since December 2014 Ernst had been recuperating from a stroke. Then a series of more strokes was more than he could overcome. We would like to offer our sincere gratitude to the KGH doctors and nurses, KGH Rehabilitation Center and Cottonwoods Care Centre, for their caring, love and support.  Ernst Egon will be sadly missed by many. The Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday June 13th at 11 AM at St. Edward's Catholic Church 11123 Okanagan Centre Rd. East, Lake Country. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to KGH Foundation "Cottonwoods".

Ernst was a very talented and caring person. We met through a mutual hobby, photography, a number of years ago at a Kelowna photography club.
Over the years I've learned of his other interest with stones and ivory when I visited his and Agnes' home in Lakecountry. Both of us developed the habit to carry a camera wherever we went. When he developed his medical issues last December I started to visit him on a regular basis. Over time I saw his improvements and declines. Both of us looked forward to seeing each other. I started to document our visits by taking pictures and writing short notes which I shared with his in and out of town relatives and friends. As his health declined he kept his humour and always was concerned about Agnes which was also a resident of Cottonwood. My condolences go out to his family and friends. I lost a good friend.

I met Ernst through our photography group. He was a talented artist and a genuinely good individual - it was always a pleasure to see him. He showed me some of his Scrimshaw and explained the process. He invited me to his home to see more but became ill before I could get there. He will be sadly missed.
