He enjoyed gardening, building, writing poems, singing tenor, painting, and the outdoors. He went on numerous excursions including in the Australian outback, Europe, and North America. He led the first ascent of Mount Blackburn in Alaska in 19568. There were many other first ascents, including of University Peak in Alaska. He enjoyed swapping stories with an eclectic collection of mountaineers. Leon was predeceased by his wife, Mary, in 2021. He is survived by son Paul (Terry) and daughter Louise. It's the end of an era. In addition, Paul says he lost his best friend, who was a gentleman, scholar and genuinely honest nice person.

So very sorry for your loss. I stayed with Leon and Mary both at Big White and Kelowna in the 1970s & 80s but my parents met them first in Prince George if I'm correct? My parents Peter snd Jean moved to Cranbrook but they still kept in touch through their love of mountains and mountaineering. This photo is captioned Pine Pass 1958. Love and condolences, Jill
