Marie LAWRIE Obituary

LAWRIE (nee Rotter) Marie Dolores: 1930-2022 We bid farewell to our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother (Nana) who passed away on May 6, 2022. Left to treasure her memory are her husband of 67 years, Douglas, their son, Peter (Anna-Maria), and three grandchildren. Dolores was born at Sec. 12, Tp12, Rge24, W2nd near Avonlea, Saskatchewan. Growing up during the Depression and subsequent war years, she learned to do things like drive a tractor at a time when it was not a common activity for girls. The first lesson was somewhat unconventional with her father showing her how to steer, telling her to follow the existing furrow and then jumping off, but it worked and soon many of the girls in the area were following her example and doing the same. Dolores went on to study accounting, working for CIBC, Lafarge Cement, Traders Finance and Vancouver City Savings. She lived in Calgary when liquor laws in the city forbade mixed-gender drinking. She and her friends would head to the dance parlours in the outlying towns where drinks could be enjoyed in mixed company. She met Doug at one of these dances and the rest, as they say, is history. The two of them hit it off and married in 1955. After marriage, they moved around some, finally moving to the Lower Mainland of BC, where their son, Peter, was born, raised and launched into the world. Upon retirement, Dolores moved with Doug to Penticton where she became involved with the IODE, serving for a term as Regent and helping to promote children, education and community. Dolores loved cats, flowers and the little things in life. She was an avid knitter and gardener and was always available for camping, coffee! and comfort. She will be missed. No Service by request. I am so sorry to hear of Dolores's passing. It just breaks my heart, she was so caring, witty and thoughtful...just a beautiful lady who was one of a kind. She will be dearly missed. I am heartbroken as I just said the other day "I need to call Dolores and tell her the news we got a new puppy". Doug & family we are thinking of you.
