Mitchell HARMATA Obituary

HARMATA, Mitchell Carl: March 2, 1929 - Dec. 26, 2017. Mitchell Carl Harmata passed away peacefully at Haven Hill Retirement Centre Penticton Dec.26, 2017 after a feisty, courageous fight with Parkinson's Disease. Born in Ellscott, Alberta, he grew up in nearby Boyle. He is predeceased by his parents John and Anna; sisters Shirley and Bonnie (Kuffler). He is survived by his loving wife, Doreen; sons, Gary (Cindy), Chris (Janet), John (Linda); daughter, Leah (Harry); grandchildren, Shanna, Lynnea, Rica, Owen, Tavis , Tess, Brian, Murray; great-grandchildren, Dan and Maya. Mitch loved family gatherings. He had a keen interest in current affairs and sports. He was a kind, humble man who set an example and gained respect with his fine work ethic. Mitch was an Alberta prairie boy at heart but he spent a good portion of his working career at Trans Mountain Pipeline in Alberta and BC. In his years working at Rivercrest Care Centre in Fort Saskatchewan, his care kindness and concern for both residents and staff was his number one priority. He was devoted to his wife and family. He spent countless hours driving his children to their sporting or cultural events throughout the province and never a complaint heard. Respected in the community he was always there to volunteer for something. During his family's many happy years in Jasper he served as a volunteer on the Hospital Board. In his retirement years he loved to go for coffee and talk about his passion, hockey. Generous to the end even while he was in Haven Hill his main concern was to ensure that his wife would be well looked after when he was gone. A Funeral Service will be held at St. John Vianney Parish 361 Wade Ave. West in Penticton on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 11:00 AM. The family wishes to thank Dr. Kooy and the staff of Haven Hill for their compassionate care. In lieu of gifts, please make donations to your provincial Parkinson's Society. Doreen and family -

It's strange, Doreen, but I remember being at your wedding in 1951 with my mom and dad, even though I was only 7. Now you have 66 years of wonderful memories and may they help sustain you in the difficult days ahead. My sincerest sympathy to you and your family.
