Monica LEIR Obituary

LEIR, Monica Rosanne: Monica Rosanne Leir, 94, of Penticton, passed away peacefully in her home on November 15th, 2021 in Penticton. Monica was born in Penticton on March 31, 1927 to Sydney Arthur Gibson (1896-1979) and Dorothy Hilda Fewtrell (1898-2005). Graduating in Penticton in 1945 within a class of twenty-three students, she then married her sweetheart John Mark Leir on June 15, 1949 at St, Savior's Anglican church in Penticton. Monica worked in the Penticton packing house as an executive assistant, as a bank teller and then later in the mid-1970s to 1990s as a librarian technician in Penticton and Kaleden schools. She was active with the Penticton Hospital Auxiliary, Saint Savior's Church Altar Guild in organizing and the Peach Festival in the late 1960s and 1970s. Monica was preceded in death by her husband John (d1986), older brother Peter Gibson (d1978) and younger sisters Janet Tidball (d2015) and Dianne Truant (d2019). She is survived by her children Jane Weitzel (partner, Michael van Kuyk), Jennifer Leir and Mark Leir (wife, Rosina Marchica), grandchildren Tristan and Darin, and several nieces and nephews including Judy Tidball, Nancy Nyhus and Susan Anderson. Monica loved her family, friends, and home. She was a steadfast friend and confidant to us all. Monica's family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to Dr. Surkan and Dr. Masson, and staff at the Penticton Emergency and Interior Health who shared in the family's astonishment of Monica's resilience through her final decade. As requested by Monica, a memorial and interment will be arranged by her family on a warm sunny day in Penticton in the spring of 2022 to celebrate the closing of an era. Although Monica loved flowers, her compassion for the underdog was paramount, and so she prefers that, in lieu of flowers, any donations be made to the Penticton SPCA. Always so good, unselfish, and kind, Few on this Earth her equal we find, Honourable and upright in all her ways, Loyal and true to the end of her days.
