NICHOLAS BEVANDA Obituary

BEVANDA, NICHOLAS JOHN: Nicholas John Bevanda, longtime Penticton resident whose architectural design can be seen throughout the Okanagan, died Sun., May 7, 2017, in Penticton surrounded by his wife and children. He was 54. Nick was born May 10, 1962, in Vancouver, BC. He moved to Penticton in 1976 where he attended Penticton Secondary School. In school, he excelled in visual arts and he was a gifted athlete. He received top honors for athletics and was the captain of the Golden Hawks football team. He earned a bachelor's degree in architecture and science from Washington State University in 1985. Nick was an extraordinary architect and had a successful career. He started his own firm, Bevanda Architecture in 2003. He later became Vice President and Design Principal of HDR|CEI Architecture. Nick left a lasting legacy in the Okanagan through the buildings he designed, including the Hooded Merganser, Black Hills Estate Winery, and Penticton Secondary School. Many of his designs earned accolades and recognition. He received the Lieutenant Governor's Award of Merit in 2008. He was also made a fellow of the Royal Architecture Institute of Canada in 2015. He believed in serving his community by donating time to several organizations. He was a proud member of the Penticton Okanagan Rotary Club for more than 20 years. He served on the Board of Moog and Friends Hospice House. Nick's family was the most important aspect of his life. He had a loving marriage to his wife Sandy for 23 years. He passed on to his children an affinity for creativity and an appreciation for music, film and history. He taught his children how to play guitar and draw while also nourishing each of their individual passions. He placed his family's happiness and well-being above all else. His strong family values were heavily rooted in his Croatian heritage and Catholic faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Violet Bevanda. He is survived by his wife, Sandy (Gialitakis); his children, Branko, Luka, Carolina and Domenic; his siblings, Kathy (Robert) Campbell, Tony (Sandra), Elizabeth, and John (Chelsea); and his many nieces and nephews. Our family would like to thank the Penticton Regional Hospital, the amazing staff at Moog and Friends Hospice House and our friends and family for their support and compassion. A Prayer Service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, May 19, at St. Ann's Church, 1298 Main Street, in Penticton. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 20, at St. Ann's Church with a reception following at noon, at the Hooded Merganser Bar and Grill, 21 Lakeshore Drive West. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Nick's memory to the Moog and Friends Hospice House. Condolences may be shared by visiting www.everdenrust.com

Nicole and I will miss Nick's smile, his kindness and warmth and his thoughtful approach. I truly enjoyed chatting with him on flights to Vancouver and working with him on a recent project. He truly made the world a better place through his diligent work as an architect and the generous time he spent as a member of Rotary. Deepest condolences to Sandy and the kids. Far to early to lose such a great person.

I was so sorry to read of Nick's passing. I only knew Nick for a few years through my work with the AIBC, but always appreciated and valued those contacts. He was too young and had far too much yet to do, to leave his family and friends so soon; I am so sorry.
