Robert Stuart Porter

Porter, Robert Stuart : October 18, 1936 - January 29, 2026 Robert (Bob/Rob) was born in Vancouver, B.C., the only child to Charles (Chuck) and Margaret Porter. He spent his childhood growing up in the Okanagan, attending school in Vernon and Kelowna, graduating from Kelowna Secondary School (KSS). As a teenager he enrolled in the Sea Cadet Corps and at the age of 17 he received the distinguished honour of being chosen to represent Canada on a European voyage aboard the naval ship, HMCS Micmac. Bob loved the Navy and went through university on the United Naval Training Division (UNTD) program. He graduated from the University of British Columbia (UBC) with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree followed by Law Degree. While attending university, he spent his summers living near Victoria, BC at Royal Roads Military College. Bob rose to the rank of Lieutenant and his favourite story of all, that he never failed to repeat, was the evening he met Wendy at Royal Roads, where he resided in the historic Hatley Castle as a Canadian Naval Lieutenant. He was a true Officer and a Gentleman, highly loyal, honest, ethical, and honourable. Wendy was the love of his life from the moment he met her. They married and upon university graduation, drove up to Kelowna where Bob began his law articles with the firm, Fillmore and Co. Kelowna was a small town in those days and Bob was the quintessential "country lawyer", looking after all aspects of his client's needs. As Kelowna grew, he moved to specialized work in personal injury law, was a highly skilled litigator appearing in Supreme Court between Kelowna and Vancouver, and received the distinguished honour of Queens Council (QC). He loved practicing law, the legal community, his colleagues, staff and friends. He carried on a long and much loved career as a lawyer and his legacy lives on in Porter Ramsay Law Firm. Bob was a volunteer and board member within the community, was compassionate, generous, and kind, and would do anything for anyone he cared about. He was active in the Kelowna Bar Association, the Kelowna Art Gallery, was an honorary life member of the Kelowna Fish and Game Club and belonged to the Lonely Loon Fly Fisher's Society. His greatest pride and love was his family, teaching each of his three children from the time they were young to downhill and cross country ski, swim, drive a boat, paddle a canoe, fly fish, ice skate, play soccer, woodwork, how to polish their leather shoes and to appreciate nature and animals. Bob loved adventure and the outdoors. Winter weekends were spent at their Big White ski condo and summer days at their beach and boating down Okanagan Lake. He and Wendy shared countless adventures together taking road trips, boating, skiing, and hiking with their much loved Airedale Terriers. He loved hosting boisterous dinner parties, had an undeniable sense of humour, and loved telling stories of his youth, years in the Navy, and his UBC fraternity (Zeta Psi) days. He loved his sports cars, coaching soccer, following sports and his many pets. He had the highest respect for wildlife and animals and treated all humans as equals. Bob is dearly missed, and leaves behind Wendy and their three children, Charles (Michelle), Tannis, and Rachel (Jeff); as well as his five grandsons, Chase (Claudia), Callum (Nadia), Ethan, Benjamin and Timothy, and his two great grandsons, James and Owen. After a lengthy illness, Bob passed away on January 29, 2026, and is forever loved and missed.
