Richard Anthony Spooner
Richard Anthony Spooner was born on October 21, 1936 to parents Tony and Jennie Spooner in Didsbury, Alberta. Apart from four years in Westbrook, Ontario, he spent most of his youth growing up in the Harmattan area west of Olds. Richard attended the Inverness school until grade 9 and completed high school in Red Deer. He married Audrey Fay Porter on September 8, 1962.
Richard made many friends and acquaintances over the years, working in a variety of jobs in Calgary and the Olds area. Whether it was fixing office machines or selling motor cycles, snap-on-tools or computers, he had an entrepreneurial spirit and the blessing of no fear. His inquisitive mind, interest in technology and do-it-yourself aptitude lead him to learn the ins and outs of computers, operating his own computer business for several years. He also built his own home, twice, where he lived with Audrey until she entered long-term care with dementia in 2013.
Richard always saw the best in everyone and was eager to help where he could. He passed away on October 12 at South Health Campus in Calgary following a brave battle with multiple health issues over the past 6 months. A loyal husband, father and friend he will be missed dearly.
Richard is survived by his wife Audrey (Porter), brother Norman (Linda), children David (Susan) and Wanda (Vladimir) as well as four grandchildren Jeffrey, Erik, Anthony and Jeni. He was predeceased by his parents Robert Martyn Spooner and Jennie Maenita Stringer.
In keeping with his wishes, a small gathering for family and friends was held. Thank you to all of the caring people who worked so hard to keep him with us at Olds Hospital and Care Centre, Red Deer Regional Hospital, The Rockyview and the South Health Campus in Calgary. Memorial tributes in lieu of flowers are preferred to any of the above, The Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice.
