Eldon Lautermilch Obituary

Eldon passed away peacefully in Regina in February, shortly after being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He was born in Lafleche, SK in 1949 to Milton and Selma (Fauser), and was little brother to Shirley, now of Sherwood Park, Alberta. He and his sister, who married neighbour Maurice Greenfield, remained very close over the years. Like many of his generation and upbringing, Eldon was both musical and handy. He was prepared to play and repair almost anything – and he kept instruments and tools with him throughout his life. Trained in electronics at Saskatchewan Technical Institute, Eldon married Loretta Brooks in Regina in 1970. Loretta's many sisters and brothers became an important and ongoing part of their lives together. Family meant everything to Eldon, and he and Loretta raised three children: Rae (Keith), Stacey (Chantel) and JoAnne. Their family grew to include in-laws, pets, nieces, nephews, cousins and grandchildren (Ryann, Ethan, June, Grady, Bren) who were showered with time, love and attention. Eldon's heart was centered in Emma Lake, where, after moving to Prince Albert in 1970, he and Loretta purchased a cabin in 1980. Eldon first worked in P.A. in radio and television repair before moving on to take over Old Fashion Foods, the family business. In 1986, he was elected to the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly and proudly served local constituents and the people of Saskatchewan until retirement in 2007. He was most proud of facilitating an agreement for Indigenous-operated gaming in the province, a first in Canada. Never one to idle, Eldon became a realtor in Regina before fully retiring in 2020. Throughout his life, Eldon collected people. He had a wide circle of friends and colleagues that meant the world to him. Above all, he cherished Loretta, and would not have had the life he did without her boundless support. The family is grateful for the care Eldon received in his final weeks, particularly from the staff at the General Hospital, 6E and F. A private interment will be held for family and close friends at a later date. Donations in Eldon's memory may be made to Special Olympics Saskatchewan or ALS Saskatchewan. Family and friends are invited to leave tributes at www.reginafuneralhome.ca. Arrangements entrusted to Regina Funeral Home and Cemetery (306) 789-8850.

Sad to learn of Eldon´s passing. My thoughts and prayers to his family. I had the privilege of working with Eldon when I worked at the Saskatchewan Research Council. He was a strong supporter of SRC and a mentor to me in understanding government. Rest well Minister Eldon.

My sincere condolences on the passing of Eldon. He will always be remembered for all he did for this province and the people of Prince Albert Northcote. I was thinking of him and thanking him as I drove the twinned highway between P.A. and Saskatoon this past weekend. Rest peaceful Eldon.

Linda and I offer our condolences to Loretta and family. I really appreciated serving with Eldon in and outside the Legislature. He was a great supporter of this province as well as the issues of northerners and Indigenous peoples. He was highly committed and passionate about his work, and he also took time for some laughter. He will be missed.

Loretta, Rae, Stacey and Joanne,

Sending you love and sincerest condolences...

I feel immensely blessed to be able to cherish the wonderful memories of experiences with Eldon. He was such a strong and passionate man who had an incredible depth of understanding.

His presence was large and will be missed....in particular his sense of humour and laughter.

Saskatchewan was fortunate for his work ethic and advocacy. He left a significant legacy and inspiration for others to follow.

Rest in peace, my friend..........
