Harald Meyer Obituary

It is with deep sadness, we announce the passing of our father, Harald John Meyer, on September 9, 2025, at 89 years old. Unfortunately, he succumbed to a severe case of sepsis, passing peacefully with family by his side.

Harald was born in Riga, Latvia, third child to Alexander and Walida Meyer, on January 11, 1936. They lived an affluent life until World War II, when Alexander went to war. Harald, his mother, and sisters were separated from Alexander when they had to relocate, eventually finding each other through the Red Cross. The family then settled in, Weildfeld, a northern town in Germany by the Baltic Sea. Harald recalled swimming in the Baltic and the house they stayed in, which still stands today.

Harald went to school in Germany, then trained as a blacksmith, and later worked at a Mercedes Benz plant in Germany. In the late 50's, being adventurous and wanting to be a cowboy, he emmigrated to Canada. He got a pair of cowboy boots and that wasn't all; he wanted to get rich and pan for gold in the Wild West. While he never struck gold, he hit the jackpot when he met Aline Dussault, who he called "Tiger."

Harald and Tiger were married in Prince Albert on a cold day, November 28, 1964. They had four children, Rosalie, Diana, Maureen and Kurt. Harald worked as a partner in Selmec Engineering and eventually would operate his own businesses: Amec Engineering and Amec Design. Harald was a Mechanical and Electrical designer for commercial buildings. He did the plans for memorable buildings such as the Saskatchewan Penitentiary, The Northern Lights Casino and St. Mary's High School.

His hobbies were hunting, fishing and camping. He was a very capable carpenter, welder, handyman and he even made steel railings. He built his own house in Peter Pond and that was the site for many celebrations. Peter Pond is a community of fun-loving families. They were known as the Peter Pond Bunch. There were garage parties, costume parties and mock weddings. Harald loved them all. Some of the families travelled together to the USA using CBs to communicate in their caravan.

Once the children were grown and having families of their own, Harald was semi-retired and he and Aline became Snowbirds. They had a motorhome at first but then upgraded to a 5th wheel. They drove through some precarious weather through the prairies and the mountains. On one occasion their kids called the RCMP to see if they made it through the US border, which they did. Harald and Aline made so many friends at their sunny winter abode and enjoyed several years back and forth.

Aline and Harald celebrated their 50th Anniversary in Prince Albert in the summer of 2014 followed up with a family vacation in Las Vegas in November that year. Those events were very memorable, and we look back fondly at all the people who were able to attend and celebrate with us. A year later, Harald suffered a significant stroke which left him unable to speak and he needed to use a walker. This was a major event and international travel was suspended. However, the Peter Pond Bunch and family rallied and tried to make his life as much as possible like his old style. Harald was able to adapt to his new restrictions and was as happy as he could be for nearly 8 years. Then tragedy struck again when Aline, his love and caregiver, got ill and passed away in August of 2023.

Birchview Home in Birch Hills, SK, became his new home. Thanks to the caring staff and his willingness to adapt, he was quite content. The Rec program was excellent, and Harald went on many outings: golf carts, bowling, casino and lunches. He had regular visits with family and friends. On one occasion his daughters took him to Rosy's Bar in Birch Hills and Harald is the reason that Happy Hour was instituted as a regular excursion for Birchview residents.

Harald was a people watcher and wanted to make sure everyone was attended to. He was generally happy go lucky but was not afraid to make the staff know if something was not right. You will always remember Harald for his firm handshake. He would give you a teasing smile but would not back down. However, his strength would not last forever and his age contributed to his eventual decline. His last days were full of the most compassionate, knowledgeable and caring staff at Birchview and Victoria Hospital.

We would like to acknowledge the unconditional love he received during his residency and all staff at the Victoria Hospital especially Dr. Natalie and Nurse Rebecca in his last hours. Aunty Marie Jacobson and Father Nick together with his four adoring children were there during his last rights and transition to heaven. We know he is with his beautiful wife, Aline "Tiger" now sharing a nightcap. No one will go thirsty at Harry's Bar.

Harald is predeceased by his parents, Alexander and Walida Meyer; sisters, Maria Hartwich and Erika Witt; and loving wife, Aline Meyer (née Dussault). He is survived by his children, Rosalie Meyer-Kuzniar (Ken Kuzniar), Diana Meyer (Stacey McLachlin), Maureen Meyer-Mannix (Ken Mannix), and Kurt Meyer; grandchildren, Kalyn Lavallee, Courtney Robb (Cody), Devin Meyer (Ashley Waiter), Oschean Ulmer (Kyle), Jade Offret (Brandon), Katlin Meyer, Kira McLachlin, Hannah Kuzniar, Emily Kuzniar; great-grandchildren, Dominic, Camille, Samuel, Caleb, Isla, Eva, and newest great-grandson Valen; and brother, Herb Meyer (Lilly);.
