June 16, 1935 - November 16, 2021
It is with great sorrow that his family announces his peaceful passing at his residence in Sudbury. Sid was born in Apsley. Son of the late Esther and Anthony Downing. Brother to the late Blanch Michaelis (Gordon) and the late Doris Wheeler (John). He is also predeceased by his stepfathers Ernie Watkinson and Owen James. Sid lived most of his life in Parry Sound. He will be dearly missed by his wife of 51 years, Mildred (Mila) (nee Futros). He was a cherished father to Valerie Downing, the late Kathy Barry, the late David Downing, Sherri Peachey, Cyril Downing (Dianne) and Monica Dailey (Donald). Loving Grandpa to Aaron, Bob, Kaitlyn, Carley (Tanner), Spencer (Kristen), Jacob and Casey. Great Grandpa to Lucas, Raider, Simon and Emry. Sid was a special friend to his in-laws Mary (the late, Ernie), Rudy (Linda), Alice (John), Marie, Johnny (Laura), Annie, Cathy, Mike (Barb), and Patrick. He leaves many admiring nieces and nephews and also mentored many young people in the town of Parry Sound. GUS will be missed dearly by Olinka, Leora and Suzy.
Sid moved to Parry Sound at the age of 11 where he studied to become a hoisting engineer, heavy duty machine operator, mechanic and Superintendent with Macklaim Construction and after 50 years retired from Fowler Construction in Parry Sound. He then continued with Auctioning and community service in Parry Sound. Sid spent most of his spare time as a hobby farmer on Welcome Acres Petting Farm, beekeeper, Chauffeur for Sequin Sarahs and Sams and all-around good ambassador of Parry Sound. Sid very much enjoyed spending time with family and friends, sharing music, travelling to bluegrass and fiddle competitions and helping his community wherever possible. He was a very caring man that often thought of others over himself. A special thanks is given for the kindness of the workers of Bayshore in Sudbury.
Cremation has taken place. Friends and family are invited to attend the Celebration of Sid's life at the Torrance Funeral Home (89 Bowes St. Parry Sound) on Saturday November 27, 2021, at 2 p.m. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Due to the current public health recommendations, it is requested that all that are attending have complete Covid vaccinations.
