Although I was just beginning to know Gil and his adorable wife Linda, they immediately made me feel warm and welcome into their home. I asked Gilley if he would be interested in making me a reining saddle. He jumped at the opportunity and the two came out to meet us. Gilley brought his golden book of saddles he made over the years with him to show me. I knew he was good. I had been told. But I never imagined. But I knew. In my heart I knew this man was brought to me for a reason. I'll always remember the day I went to look at my saddle in his shop. The smell of fine leather, just like his hands. The old tools he kept sharp and refined, just like his mind. His grin from ear to ear as he laughed when I wouldn't get my butt off the saddle. I then began to wonder about this man. And in that moment, I knew I had found a friend I would cherish for the rest of my life. Gillie was a man who didn't need to say too much, he just knew things. I wanted to hear it all, all the stories about him in the saddle, the rides, the broncs, the bulls, the friendships along the way. In all that wisdom , I knew there were so many stories I was aching to hear. I saw all the buckles, all the trophy's, all the news stories about this legendary man and cowboy. I was awestruck. It was then it all came together. I was indeed in great company.
I am proud to say, I have the last original Gil Bowe saddle he ever made. I will cherish it as I will cherish him. Every ride I am on, Gillie will be with me, riding silently, and grinning from ear to ear. I will miss you Gil, thank you and Linda for being for being my friends. I'll be the one on Old Paint. Love, Leane.
