Jagdev Jawanda Obituary

JAWANDA, Jagdev Singh Born on October 25, 1926, our beloved Papa was tragically taken from us on January 8, 2012. He was born in the village of Shankar, dist. Ludhiana, India to the late Nahar Singh and Jasmail Kaur Jawanda. Papa was the fourth of five brothers, Harbans Singh Jawanda (deceased), Pritpal Singh Jawanda (deceased), Bhagwant Singh Jawanda, and Parminder Singh Jawanda. He was also pre-deceased by his wives Sudershan (1969), and Mohinder (2006). He leaves behind five children Vanindar (Kulbir) Lail, Manindar Jawanda, Mandeep (Leah) Jawanda, Sudeep (Jasmine) Jawanda, Harindar (Manraj) Heran, as well as nine treasured grandchildren (Nick, Tony, Natasha, Shaan, Jaya, Taryn, Aishwarya, Arjan, and Sachin). He was highly educated, achieving Honors status in his Masters Degree. He was the Headmaster of Machhiwara Boys School before emigrating to Canada in 1963. He was a math teacher in McBride and Prince George for twenty years until his retirement in 1983. Papa worked tirelessly within the Guru Gobind Singh Temple Association, and the impact of his contributions will be felt for future generations. Papa was a man of strong principles and values. Foremost were his beliefs in family and the power of education. He also had deep faith and truly lived by the principles of the Sikh religion. His strong will, determination, and courage allowed him to overcome adversity and challenges in his life. Papa's honesty, forthrightness and fearlessness to do what he felt was right were unique and distinguishing. Our family and the community will forever benefit and be thankful for his time, wisdom, guidance and the values he taught us all. Memorial Service to be held at Assmans Funeral Chapel on Sat. Jan. 14th at 11 am, followed by a service and Lunch at the Guru Gobind Singh Temple at 5th and Kelly. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jagdev Singh Jawanda Scholarship fund at any Scotiabank location.

Sardar Jawanda was not only my brother-in-law but also my elder brother. I have learnt a lot from him. Every winter we in the family used to wait for them in India for their (with his wife) winter vacations. After the death of his wife he was in regular touch with us. His death has left void in our family. He has given such values to his children that they are also loved by all of us and we are always with them in this time of grief. May God give peace to the departed soul and enough strength to his children and we all to bear this shock. Satwinder, Mohali

First, our deepest condolences to the whole family. Jagdev was a man of great wisdom and humour. We knew both him and Mohinder during our years living in Prince George while he worked with employment insurance translating for the investigation section. He taught us about people and their culture. As guests in their home for Thanksgiving, my husband commented upon arriving to me, " I hope they don't put curry in the stuffing". Well, they did and it was fabulous. Something else Jagdev taught me,"Don't be afraid of change."
