Joan MCKAY Obituary

Joan Edith McKay (Robertson) born in Vernon, B.C. February 26, 1934 died peacefully in her sleep, November 4, 2023 a few months shy of her 90th birthday.

Mother to Sandra (Steve) Jenvey - Dundas, Ontario, Bruce McKay - Nanaimo, B.C., Valerie (Tom) Landine - Esterhazy Saskatchewan and Nana to Lydia, Graeme, Kate, Emma, Jane; Great Grandma to Abby, Graham, Sloan, Rhen, Reid, Levi, Wes, Reese and Rory.

Predeceased by infant son, Gregor Alexander and infant daughter, Christine Helen, parents, Gordon and Edith Robertson, siblings, Margaret, Donald and Alan Robertson.

She lived in Prince George since 1953 and was an enthusiastic ambassador for her Northern home.

While she had a young family she was a member of the Kinettes in the 50's and 60's and then volunteered her time with the Hospital Auxiliary for over 40 years. During the 70's she discovered her passion for acting and was in many productions with the Theatre Workshop. From 1996 - 2017 she enjoyed her connection to the Rainbow Singers/Forever Young Chorus.

Having a heart for people who struggled in their lives she gave support to many organizations over the years, two of which were World Vision and Christian Children's Fund. In recent years she provided bursaries to aboriginal students graduating from high school within School District #57.

Joan was a dedicated letter writer - whether to her family and friends or Letters To The Editor, her writing desk was always cluttered. The recipients of her letters included heads of state, prime ministers and presidents. Fidel Castro and Yuri Andropov were even among that list. Amnesty International provided opportunity for her to write many letters on behalf of those wrongly imprisoned and it was her joy to know that her efforts contributed to their release.

She would like to be remembered as a lover of her "darling families" and particularly of her 5 grandchildren, a lover of Nature and devoted to our Great Creator God.

I had the pleasure of meeting this special lady a year and a half ago through my work. I was able to see her regularly from her home to her seniors facility. She always made me smile. She will always hold a special place in my heart

To Sandra, Bruce, and Valerie - I babysat you guys a lot on Edmonton street and I always thought your mom was such a beautiful lady. She really did sparkle and twinkle when she smiled. I loved you guys, hope you´re all doing well. Susan Clark, from the cul de sac

Sandra, Bruce, Valerie and your families - I have such wonderful memories of those Christmas and New Year´s dinners that we shared when we were all very young. Your mom, always such a gracious hostess with sparkling eyes and light laughter - she had a way of making people feel special. Our thoughts are with all of you right now. Love and Hugs, Nancy and Dale Smigerowsky
