Johannes Giede Obituary
His life began in Prince George, and he was proud to be raised in this northern community. After graduating from PGSS, Johannes pursued further education and completed a medical degree at UBC in 1988, followed by a family practice residency. After five years of family practice in Prince George, Johannes began specialization in psychiatry, and until his untimely death, brilliantly served hundreds of people in Northern BC.
Johannes was also a man of deep faith. For over 30 years, he was a member of Westwood Church, often taking up the role of teacher as well as elder.
As a friend and family man, Johannes was intensely loyal, leading all with integrity, wisdom, generosity and humour. His ethics led him to believe that challenges were just opportunities by another name.
Left to grieve the significant loss of a great man are his beloved wife and soulmate, Naomi; sons Nathan (Michelle) and Andrew (Jamie); and his two precious grandchildren, Jax and Molly. His mother, Elisabeth, brother Christopher (Carol), and sister, Marlis (Stephen), are also devastated, as well as extended family members, friends, team members, and a countless number of patients and their families.

To honour the life of Johannes there will be a live-streamed service on January 15th, 2 pm through westwoodchurch.bc.ca. Unfortunately, attendance is limited to family members.
We are grateful that the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation is accepting donations to develop a project bearing Johannes' name.

Dr. Giede saved me, no doubt about it. His care for me as a patient carried me through my most difficult period, and with his help, I made it to where I am now. There has been no one else that has impacted me as much, and I mean that sincerely. I hope his friends and family can find some peace in the fact that he helped so many people. What an incredible man, and his memory will never ever leave me. Truly a blessing to have crossed his path in this lifetime.

Johannes was one of the most influential mentors in medicine I ever met. He and I only spent one month together back in 2005, but from our conversations I learned more about life and being a good doctor than much of the rest of my fourteen years of post-secondary education.
Now as a busy medical educator myself, I recently found myself quoting him on a FOAM podcast episode, passing his wisdom from 18 years ago, onto colleagues and the next generation of Rural/Remote doctors.
I am so sad to hear of your passing Johannes; I am tearful. Your legacy will continue to live on in so many ways. In this instance, your words will continue to touch hundreds of others through future doctors-patient interactions; some of whom weren't even born during your lifetime. Godspeed.

Dr Giede will be missed by so many friends, family, clients and colleagues.
Johannes was my colleague for 7 wonderful years. I loved his intelligence, competence, knowledge, humour, he was KIND!
He treated everyone with respect and really listened when you spoke to him.
I only had sporadic contact with him after those 7 joyous years I spent with him. Last summer our paths crossed again on the AP Unit. He wanted to hear all about my well-being and was interested in knowing what I had been up to. The young person I was serving was so blessed to have his professional advice and diagnosis. That person has a challenging path in front of them but at least they had someone gifted and truly caring to guide them in their first steps to recovery.
I can´t imagine how the people in his personal circle will be without the sound of his laughter and his enduring love.

What I knew about Dr Giede, so many truly beautiful things like:
He always treated me as the mental health professional I am never once did he ever treated me less than because I live with bipolar.
Whenever I advocated for a client he always had time to listen and to went the extra mile into solving systemic wrongs. I was supporting a young person on APU during the summer of 2021 and we set up the pass for an outing together. He made a special effort to talk to me personally/privately just to see what was new with me.
He was so intelligent, creative, KIND and beyond competent. He was a gifted exceptional person whom I had a deep respect for. I loved this man for exactly who he was. I can´t imagine what the people in his personal circle will do to heal from the tremendous loss of his joy-filled spirit.

I would like to extend my condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Dr. Johannes Giede. It was with great shock and sadness that I learned of Johannes' sudden passing. I had the privilege of interacting professionally with Johannes over the course of 15 years of working first in community child and youth mental health and then consulting to Northern Health. I greatly respected his expertise and dedication to working in support of his many patients. After many years of attending psychiatry rounds with Johannes I will forever remember him walking down the hallways of the hospital, slightly hunched over, with phone to ear as he headed to the emergency department to address yet another admission. The impact on his community was great in life as it will be in death.

Our condolences to the family
In 2000 my life came apart when I was hospitalized Dr Giede met with me the next day. This began a long journey to put me back on track I will be forever grateful. I had not seen him for many years but we did speak last fall briefly till we meet again.

Dear Naomi and family, I was saddened to hear of Johannes' passing. I always enjoyed, and benefited, from his thoughtful approach to clinical and social issues when I happened to be on rotation with him during psychiatry residency. I was also fortunate enough to bump into him at conferences now and then over the years, where is was so easy to slip back into interesting discussions on topics of interest. Johannes was always open and warm but did not hesitate to ask the pertinent questions to get to the heart of the clinical question or make one think about the social issue being discussed. On behalf of the staff and faculty of the Northern Medical Program I wish to express our sincere condolences on the passing of your loved one, Dr. Johannes Giede.
Johannes was a beloved and cherished preceptor and colleague for all those that came into contact with him. Especially for our students who were gifted with his passion for medical education. He also contributed as an education leader for our programs for which we are truly grateful. I do hope that during this difficult period you may find comfort in knowing the difference that he made. It is because of dedicated teachers like Dr. Giede that the Northern Medical Program has been so successful in training physicians from and for northern and rural communities.
He will be sorely missed and we will forever be grateful for the gifts he gave us.

Thanks Dr Giede for the love you gave to many of us who were blessed to know and work with you. I remember arriving PG in October 2012 and had no accommodation yet. You and Naomi opened your home for me, a perfect stranger to stay until when I could settle. On the 12th of January 2022, 06:05am 27 days after going into eternal glory, you still did not forget to stop by my house to say a final goodbye. We all love you, but the Lord loves you more. Johannes was a good man. I had the pleasure of working with him when I first entered the field of psychiatry. I am so sorry to hear of Johannes' death. I was his mother, Marlis' stand partner in the viola section of the PGSO for years, and watched Johannes and Chris as they learned to play their stringed instruments. It must be devastating for his family and all his patients to lose him.

Cannot even believe that someone as full of life as Johannes has left us all. He was one of the first people we met when we moved to Prince George in 1990 and I have nothing but fond memories of time with Johannes and Naomi- hospitality, camping trips, church, small groups. You have left your mark on us all and will be missed.

Dr.Giede ,as I knew him was a tremendous help and encouragement to me. I met him first as a teanager, and have a great deal of respect for him. I bumped into him a couple times since then and am very happy that I had the chance to thank him verbally for his help, although I feel like I owe much more than that.
