Robin Lowry Obituary

Dr. Robin Lowry passed away in Victoria on September 4, 2022, and is survived by his wife, Rosemary Lach; daughter, Christine; and siblings, Claire, Peter and Guy. He was predeceased by his beloved son, Philip, in 2009.

Robin was a brilliant physician and completed his undergraduate and postgraduate training at McGill University in the late 1970s. Part of his training included an exchange year at the Teaching Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya - reflecting his sense of adventure. Robin's primary medical interest was nephrology, and he perfected his skill set in dialysis and kidney transplantation at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC, and the University of Alabama in Mobile, Alabama. He was a skilled researcher as well as a clinician with over 50 publications to his name. Robin returned to Canada in 2000 to work in Campbell River before moving to Prince George in 2002 to join the Internal Medicine and Nephrology team at the now University Hospital of Northern BC. He became a director of the Kidney Foundation of Canada. Robin was a born teacher, a quality listener, an astute clinician and a kind, generous soul. He entered semi-retirement in 2013 and relocated to Victoria. His love of northern BC and its residents was evident by his continued delivery of consultative internal medicine services to the Northeastern and Northwestern reaches of Northern Health from the base of his travelling motorhome. Robin and his wife Rosemary would make this trip from Victoria twice yearly to share his medical wisdom with his northern colleagues from Haidi Gwaii, to the Yukon, to Valemont and communities in between.
Robin was much loved and respected by his patients and colleagues; his passing was premature but peaceful. A true unsung hero.

Carla and I know Robin and Rosemary only as neighbors in James Bay, and it´s wonderful to learn and see the impact Robin has had on the medical community and peoples health. For us, he was a man who began every interaction with his warm smile followed by friendly conversation. He would always be on the lookout to be helpful in some way. I could tell he was a man who brought a lot of joy into the lives of others. So sorry for your loss Rosemary. I took this photo of him on the breakwater in James Bay, Victoria on May 25, 2020 during one of our several walks in the neighborhood.

I remember Robin from first year at Loyola High School in Montreal back in 1959-60. Shock of blond hair, big British accent. Loyola was then an all-boys´ school. He was called on to speak in our elocution class. Nervously, he began: "Boys and girls,..." We al laughed. No one would laugh today. Loyola went co-ed this year.

Fondly remembered when we met on Victoria´s Inner Harbour riding his bike in retirement. We reflected on his days caring for cancer patients in Campbell River and his many tours in northern BC consulting in Internal Medicine. Sending sympathies to his family from BC Cancer.
