Gerarda Newport Obituary
Gerarda Martina Antonia Newport, age 88, passed away peacefully on the 9th day of December 2021 at her home in Osoyoos, BC. She was born on May 25, 1933, in Naarden, Noord-Holland, Netherlands to Pieter and Elfreida (Flasch) DeBaar. Gerarda married Peter in 1954 in the Netherlands. They were happily married for 67 years. Gerarda was preceded in death by her father Pieter De Baar; mother Elfreida De Baar; and sister Elfreida Heiner Gerarda. She is survived by her spouse Peter of Osoyoos, BC; children Henri (Alea) Newport, Anita (Richard) MacDonald, Yvonne Newport (Charles Fort), Rene (Cindy) Newport; brothers Julius (Ann) De Baar, Pieter (Tineke) De Baar; grandchildren Nik (Rebecca) Newport, Marika (Paul) Maki, Shawn (Sherill) Bateham, Raymund (Amanda) Newport, Ashtn (Mikayla) Newport, Karl Fort, Sasha (Jason) Chih, Cory (Stacey) Newport, Samantha (Rodney) Mailhot; her ten great-grandchildren and her great-great-grandchild; and her many nieces and nephews.
Gerarda and Peter moved to Canada in the early years of their marriage with a small son and not much money in their pockets. They soon settled in the small town of Powell River, BC, where they brought in three more children. Gerarda worked very hard to raise her family while Peter was often out of town working. Her children have many fond memories of her and how she always put family first and made sure they had everything they needed. After her children had grown and started their own families, she decided it was time to move to a warmer climate, so they packed up and moved to the interior of BC, where they lived happily for the last 30 years. Once in the BC Interior, they became involved with square dancing, and Gerarda embraced the dance and the people with her usual warmth and vitality. She was also involved in the charity, Power Pioneers, and the local hospital; she would offer up her talents to sew quilts and knit blankets and baby sweaters. Her hands were never still - Gerarda was such a talented needleworker that anyone who knew her boasts a gift from her heart. Gerarda's smile and warmth will be missed greatly.
There will be no service held at this time.
