Elfriede DORGE Obituary

DORGE, Elfriede Martha Elisabeth
(née Kober)

Elfriede was a caring wife, mother, grand-mother, great-grandmother and friend. She left this world on May 17, 2023. She was predeceased by daughter Angelika and husband Otto. Elfriede is survived by her daughters Elfi and Evelin; grandchildren Catherine, David and Erika (and their partners Andrew, Natalie, and Neil, respectively), and great-grandchildren Bernice and Eloise.

Born to Franz Kober and Emma Kober (née Kolberg) on September 28, 1921 in Berlin, Germany, Elfriede grew up in the town of Zehdenick in the Oberhavel region of Brandenburg. Elfriede had a challenging early adulthood. She grew up in the tumultuous period leading up to the second world war, and after high school was required to support the war effort, during which she met her future husband Otto Ernst Dorge. In the four years following the war, Elfriede and her husband had three daughters, and the family found much of their lives and stability upended in Soviet-controlled East Germany. In 1953, the family was persecuted by the East German/Soviet authorities and became refugees, fleeing to West Berlin and eventually Canada.

When the family arrived in Ontario, they lived on a dairy farm in Stouffville with the kind and supportive Steckley family. During this time, Elfriede earned extra money for the family by tying up cauliflower in the fields. Eventually they put down roots in Streetsville, where Elfriede supported the family by working as a house cleaning lady, and later at CTS Corporation while also supporting the family as a homemaker. In an old dairy farm on the outskirts of Streetsville that Otto converted into a chicken farm, Elfriede helped feed the chickens and collect eggs while her husband had shift work. It was a family affair with everyone expected to lend a hand, however most of the work landed on Elfriede. Elfriede and Otto eventually followed Evelin to BC, and lived in Richmond since 1980.

Elfriede was passionate about caring for her family, and always sought ways to support them where possible. She enjoyed spending her free time baking, knitting/crocheting, and watching soap operas. An active congregant of the Trinity Lutheran Church, she contributed to outreach programs by crafting countless baby blankets, hats and sweaters which were donated to those in need of warmth in developing parts of Africa.

A celebration of life will take place on Wednesday, July 19th at 11:00 am at Trinity Lutheran Church in Richmond. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the BC Schizophrenia Society or the Canadian Cancer Society.
