Helena LENGACHER (nee Heyneman)
1920 - 2025
Helena, at the age of 104, died peacefully, surrounded by her children, on February 7, 2025, at the Foyer Sutton.
She was born September 6, 1920, to René Heyneman and Celina De Meyer in Waterland-Oudeman, Belgium. She met her husband, a Canadian soldier Alfred Lengacher, when he was liberating her village during occupation. They were married in Gent, Belgium on September 5, 1945. She left behind her homeland and everyone she loved and loved her and came to Canada as a war bride. She stepped off the RMS-Aquitania in Halifax, Nova Scotia at Pier 21 on September 4, 1946, and then continued by train to Foster, Quebec where she was met by her husband and in-laws to start a new chapter of her life in Sutton, where together with her husband they raised 7 children. She remained in the house her husband Fred built until the age of 100.
She was an active member in her community including school, church, and fraternal organizations.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Arsène Heyneman and sister-in-law Maggy Mauhin, as well as many relatives and friends.
She is survived by her seven children James (Jane), Christine, David (Joady), Larry (Georgette), Laura (Neil), Celina (Stanley) and Stephan (Penny), 22 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
She definitely has left her legacy when she took that leap of faith and made Canada her home.
We are grateful for the care that was given to our mother at Excelsoins Knowlton and Cowansville, as well as the excellent care and compassion of Dr. Marie-Pierre Dion.
