James Hurd Obituary

James Norman HURD
1939-2025

In loving memory of James Norman Hurd who died on June 05, 2025, at age 85, at his home in Smith Falls, ON, surrounded by his family.
Jim, born in Richmond, QC, on July 30,1939, son of Edmund Lionel and Mary Eva (nee Wood) Hurd. Jim married Evelyn (nee Lawrie) & later married Shirley Barr. Jim was predeceased by his parents, and his subsequent stepparents James Armstrong, Irene Matthews & Kay Ward.
He is survived by son David, Trenton, ON, and daughter, Lawrie, Belleville, ON. Jim was sadly predeceased by his son Murray. Jim is survived by and extremely proud of his three grandchildren Kirsty, Thomas and Grace. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Fred & Sandra, two nieces, Wendy & Joanne; as well as by many cousins on both the Wood and the Hurd family sides.
Jim was intelligent, full of compassion, and quick to find humour during every facet of his life over the many years. Beyond his humour, Jim had an incredible memory. Intellectually he was fiercely judgemental, but when it came to human beings, he was quite the opposite. Jim was generous in nature; even though his life had some tough times he always held on to his droll wit and so for him, his life was wonderful. He sent flowers, gifts to people he hardly knew. He was endlessly appreciative of his friendships, considering many of his friends from Smiths Falls to be part of his family. He was one of a kind.
As per Jim's request, there will be no visitation or funeral ceremony, he will be buried in Cookshire Cemetery, Quebec. Donations can be made to a Charity of Your Choice in Jim's memory.

We are very fortunate for Jim to have met our mother (Shirley) and to have spent 12 plus years together.

Jim was a wonderful friend.
I haven't known him for a long time but the memories I have are so dear to me. He was a kind man often gifting me with Montreal Canadiens memorabilia. We loved our Habs! We shared "back home" memories. Jim was witty and funny. He was the kind of person that could turn a 'not so good day' in to a wonderful day!
Thanks Jim for being a real fine friend. Thanks for putting a smile on my face.
I will always remember you Jim!
