LCol Jim Strickland most certainly had an influence on a whole generation of young Eastern Townships teenagers, who as part of the Sherbrooke Hussars in the late 1960's went on to lead full and interesting lives locally, nationally and internationally. As a young trooper in the Centennial Platoon my career path was set and I thank Jim for pointing me in that direction. It was always a joy for me to talk to Jim whenever I had the occasion to return to Sherbooke and run into him. He was indeed a true gentlemen and will always be remembered as so. My condolences to the family.

Jim/James Maxwell Strickland was not just a wonderful person, but a great man. He had an amazing way to know what someone needed, and he tried to do something about it.

He was not only kind and caring, but he was very much someone who you could earnestly trust without hesitation.

Jim always spoke about his best friend Harry, and Harry's wife and family, even years after Harry's passing. Seeing them together, if only briefly, in those moments, said it all.

Jim seemed an independent sort, but this must have been just his military training. The last time that I saw him for an afternoon in 2014, he showed me those military photos of him with her Excellency Queen Elizabeth II in 1967. He then also again gave me copies of some of our times together.

I will always be grateful for our 30-40 km bike rides together, his catamaran ride on the lake, his hospitality, his cleaning my car before 7:30 AM on 25 cm snow days in Lennoxville, just like an angel, and being a friend to both myself and to my family in Montreal.

Jim's many accomplishments were not simply through his love of the military, but as well in both Champlain College and in Bishop's College School.

He told me about his seasons' passes to both the Gaiters football games and to mine, with the Lady Gaiters', in B-Ball (after the fact). Jim took me to different outings both in Lennoxville, Sherbrooke and "across the line."

I will both miss his beautiful singing voice and cards. He represented the spirit of his era and this was imprinted on those who really spent time around him.

I will always remember the picture in his home, by his tree in front of his window, in 1990, for Christmas. And that is how he will always remain remembered in my heart.

Please accept my deepest sympathies to all of Jim's loved ones, whether friends, neighbours or family.

Sincerely,
Linda Schamer and Family, xxx .

It was a pleasure knowing Col. Strickland both as a member of the Hussars and at Champlain College where the Col. was in attendance at all the Cougars games, home and away. A true gentleman who will be fondly remembered.
