Jan Jacobus PHILIPPO
December 7, 1940 - February 6, 2023
Jan Philippo passed away peacefully at home on RiverCross Farm in the early hours of the morning on February 6 with his loving and devoted wife Sally by his side.
Jan leaves behind three children in the Netherlands, Jeannette Heil (Johan), Maurits Philippo (Arnoldine) and Henriette Batenburg (Mark) and six cherished grandchildren Thijs, Annemijn, Melle, Wessel, Mats and Janine. Also his stepchildren Clare Vivier (Mike) Conrad R. Harrington (Marilyn) and George Harrington (Helen) and grandchildren Chelsey, Nicholas, Elizabeth, Conrad and Catherine. His loving sisters in Holland, Riet, Sjaan, Greet, Nel, and in Canada his sister Thea Philippo (Calder) will miss him greatly.
Jan's life was filled with delight in working with plants and flowers both in Holland and in Portugal where he established a renowned horticultural business for 35 years. For many years he had an active role as a long-standing board member of the Keukenhof, one of the leading flower gardens in the world. The death of his first wife, Jans Philippo Van Staaveren, in 2003 was a tragedy which he and his children faced with courage. In 2006, Jan emigrated to Canada when he married his second love Sally, who had also been widowed (Conrad H. Harrington, 1998).
Together Jan and Sally spent many happy years on RiverCross Farm in the Eastern Townships, with regular visits to Sassenheim, Holland and Portugal. A true family man, radiant with Christian faith, Jan brought together two bereft families and forged a warm and loving relationship with them. He cultivated meaningful friendships around the world, with many people who will also miss his thoughtful and steady presence in their lives. Jan succumbed to a long and courageous battle with cancer and was an inspiration to all who knew him for his unfaltering resilience and optimism.
The family would like to thank Dr. Laplante and Dr. Mikail, along with the nurses of the CLSC homecare services, for their outstanding support.
A Service of Celebration and Thanksgiving will be held on Saturday, February 11 at St Paul's Church, Knowlton, at 11 o`clock followed by a reception at Auberge West Brome, 128 Route 139, West Brome, Québec, J0E 2P0.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Cedars Cancer Foundation https://www.cedars.ca/aidez-nous/donations or the ministry at St Paul's Anglican Church in Knowlton, would be appreciated.
