John Rasmussen Obituary

John Hagbardt RASMUSSEN
June 7, 1933 to March 8, 2023

John was born in Montreal on June 7, 1933 to Elinor and Hagbardt Rasmussen who both immigrated from Denmark.
John was very athletic and loved many sports and activities. He played football and rugby in high school, was a lifeguard, played tennis, squash and jogged in his later years so that he could eat and drink (a lover of wine) whatever he liked.  He loved skiing, boating, and being on the lake.  He had a great sense of humour and enjoyed the company of people.  He was a dedicated family man and friend who kept in touch with many people around the world.
John left high school in 1951 and did various jobs until he joined the Navy in 1952. He also married Mary Etta LeBaron that year. He was a sailor on the HMS-Huron based out of Halifax and served in the Korean War. After serving his 5 years in the navy, dad decided he wanted to be an airline pilot. John completed flying school in 1957 and obtained his commercial flying license, then applied to TCA, (now Air Canada) and was hired. He retired after 36 years with Air Canada flying as a captain and check pilot.  In his retirement, he was the treasurer for their local Anglican church and served on the town council in North Hatley for many years.
John leaves behind his loving wife Mary, seven children Mary Ellen, Mark, Linda, Bardt, Craig, Grant, and Andrew. He also leaves behind his sister Inge Vibe, brothers Flemming and David Rasmussen, 26 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and many relatives in Denmark. He was predeceased by his great-granddaughter Amanda-Leigh Pelser in 2003.
Dad laid down for a rest on the morning of March 8 and passed away peacefully in their home in North Hatley, Quebec. Dad had a great life and helped so many people along the way.
There will be a visitation on Friday, March 24, 2023 at Cass Funeral Home, 3006 College, Sherbrooke (Lennoxville) from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The funeral will take place on Saturday, March 25 at St Barnabas Anglican Church, 640 ch. Sherbrooke, North Hatley at 11 a.m. Interment will be held at a later date.

Although we saw each other occasionally as adults, I remember John mostly as a child when he and his family would come to my parent's cottage on Lac des Piles.
Faye and I send our condolences and deepest sympathy to John's family and relatives.
