Paul Duncan Obituary

Paul Brayton DUNCAN
1937 - 2022
Paul Brayton Duncan passed away peacefully on April 28, 2022, at the age of 85. Paul had been living in Gatineau, Quebec, and he had previously resided in Stanstead and Sherbrooke, Quebec for many years.
Paul was born in Illinois City, Illinois to Paul R Duncan and Hazel Duncan. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Dorothy Linberg Duncan. Dorothy was by his side at his time of passing.
He leaves brothers Edwin, predeceased (Jane), Jim (Shannon), Anchorage, Alaska, Ron (Teresa), St. John, Indiana and his children Greg (Susan), Natalie, predeceased, Bruce, Lynnea (Isabelle), along with grandchildren Erin Asbil-Duncan (Sean), Allessa Duncan-Clair and great-granddaughter Everly Rain Rediker, as well as nieces, nephews and many, many friends. The family wishes to extend special appreciation to the Graham family and Laurie Asbil for their love and support.
Paul was an ardent lover of languages, education, and travel. He earned an M.A. in French language and literature, and he spent his career as a French professor and languages director at Stanstead College. Paul began teaching in Sitka Alaska where he had also lived for 6 years.
He had traveled the world, hiked the Himalayas of India, driven the circuitous roads of France and walked the steep and narrow streets of Portugal. Paul mastered new languages with ease while embracing each culture whenever he visited. Having spent many autumns in Sweden in retirement with Dorothy, Paul grew to love his daily Fika, a Swedish tradition that is often translated as "a coffee and cake break," but really it is much more than that. Fika is a concept, a state of mind, an attitude. It means making time for friends, family, and colleagues to share a cup of coffee (or tea) and a little something to eat. We can all take comfort in knowing that Paul will continue spiritually to enjoy "his" Fika with us all forever.
A private family gathering for remembrance and to celebrate a loving life well-lived will be held in the spring. He will rest at Crystal Lake Cemetery in Stanstead, Quebec.
In memory of Paul, donations are welcomed at Diabetes Quebec or to an organisation of your choice.

At our age, it is so sad to see a peer leave our stage. Paul was a highly respected and moral figure at Stanstead College for years, and, Dorothy, you have lost a major part of what I saw in you at the College. How do we go on? I guess, we just do. Just now, with Paul's passing, the question is asked again.

My very deepest condolences to the Duncan family

Dearest Duncans,

It was with great sadness that I heard of Paul's passing. I feel very fortunate that I got to see Paul not so long ago and we had Fika :-) I have so many wonderful memories of Paul, going to galleries with him and Dorothy, to stanstead, him having visits with my father (and them drinking coffee and sharing stories for hours). I send you all so much love and thanks and appreciation for all the love I have gotten from the Duncan family. love Rona
