Steve Trew Obituary

Steve TREW
1942 - 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death of Steve on October 7, 2022.   Steve was the devoted husband to Janie Duncanson, proud and loving father of Sara, Jordan and the late Christy.  Steve was fond of his son-in-law Marc Theriault, and a very adoring grandfather to Maya, Reilly and Tristan.
Born and raised in Magog, QC by Jean and Jim Trew, Steve was a proud Townshipper.  He attended Bishop's University where he met Janie. They were married in 1968 and have enjoyed life in Knowlton for 54 years.
Steve was a teacher for a term in England, at Waterloo, Heroes' Memorial and Massey-Vanier High School before becoming principal at Knowlton Academy.  Steve's interest in education lasted through his retirement as a supervisor of student teachers at Bishop's University and he was very much looking forward to working with Bishop's again this semester. Steve's love of talking to people served him well with his retirement jobs at the Polo store, Jones New York and bartending at the Knowlton Pub.
A thespian at heart, Steve had a love of theater and music. He acted in and directed numerous productions through local theatre, mainly Knowlton Players.  He was in the midst of directing a Knowlton Players' production for early November at Theatre Lac Brome.
The ocean drew the family to Maine where many summer holidays were spent. Steve and Janie loved travelling and always looked forward to road trips to Ottawa and Saint John to visit their children, antique hunt and enjoy good food.
They loved spending time with the many wonderful friends they have made over the years and they were out and about most nights of the week.
Janie, Sara and Jordan extend their sincere thanks and appreciation for the kindness and support they have received.
Donations in Steve's memory would be welcomed by the Knowlton Academy Breakfast Program (cheques payable to Knowlton Academy, 81 Victoria, Knowlton, QC, J0E 1V0) or Fondation du CHUS (fondationchus.org).
Details for a celebration of Steve's life will be finalized shortly.

So very saddened to hear of Steve's passing. He was a kind man. I had the pleasure of meeting Steve last year through his Supervision of the Bishop's Student Teacher I hosted in my classroom. We enjoyed great conversations about Education and how the system has changed over the years and bonded over our love for the Townships and the many places we had in common. (Waterloo Elementary, Massey-Vanier and Bishop's University) It was a pleasure to have met him for that short time. A wonderful person who left his mark on the Townships.

Steve was a much loved and respected supervisor. His passing will leave a great void. His time at Bishop's will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of crossing his path.

My deepest sympathy to Steve´s family
I first met Steve as one of his classmates in grade 12 atSutton High School in 1959/60
We also sang together in a choral group called the Dead Wrens which was derived from the first letter in each of the members names.
Steve and I often talked about all of the places where we performed and all the fun that we had.

Steve Trew was our next-door neighbour in Knowlton for the past 23 years. We will miss his calm, quiet presence, his wise sense of irony, his love of community and the arts, his genuine interest in our kids, his 'live and let live' approach, and his deep commitment to education. They used to call our neighbourhood "teachers' row" and Steve and Janie welcomed us - as educators and Knowlton Academy parents ourselves - into the area with open arms. Steve was always up for a chat across the fence, happily taking a few minutes away from cutting the grass, raking the leaves, or setting up a garage sale. Last spring, he took a special interest in our new Labrador puppy and seemed almost ready to contact the breeder and adopt one himself. We were shocked to get the terrible news (across the fence, from Jordan and Sara) on Thanksgiving weekend, having assumed they were home to celebrate the holiday, not to mourn the loss of their beloved father. Steve Trew was a good man and an amazing neighbour. Our sincere condolences to Janie, Jordan, Sara, his entire family, and his many friends. May his memory be a blessing.

For as long as i can remember he was the pillar at knowlton academy. Mr Trew, and Mrs Graham worked great together, in managing and taking care of all the kids. I couldn't have fonder memories of elementary school. Especially our Grade 7 play (Kodiak flapjack), from the classroom of Janie (Mrs Trew) that was one of my favorites.
My sympathies to the Family, Mrs Trew, my thoughts are with you in these hard times.
