Helmut Serwotka Obituary

We are saddened to share that our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather Helmut died in Hospice following a short bout with an aggressive form of cancer. With grieving hearts, he is survived by Ruth, his loving wife of over 62 years; his children, Eric (Lynn), Peter (Carola), and Carla (Stephen); grandchildren, Dana (Alexander), Alexander (Justine), Natalie (Justin) and Rachel (Ian) and great-grandchildren, Charlotte, James, and Eleanor.

Helmut was born in Germany before immigrating to Canada with his parents as a teenager. A machinist by trade, most of his working life was spent in Kapuskasing, Ontario where he was employed at Spruce Falls Pulp and Paper Company, met, and married Ruth and raised his family. After retirement Helmet and Ruth settled in Victoria Harbour, Ontario before moving closer to family in Belleville, Ontario.

A charismatic and generous man, Helmut loved spending time with family and friends. He was also passionate about his hobbies which included being a Life Master at Bridge, fishing, and woodworking. We are fortunate to have many keepsakes that he crafted over the years to go along with our memories. He made an impact on many lives and will be forever missed.

In keeping with his wishes cremation has occurred with no formal service. We look forward to celebrating his life and remembering what he meant to us in meaningful ways over the coming months.

For those who wish to honour Helmut, donations in his memory to the Salvation Army or Hospice Quinte would be appreciated.

So many memories (and life lessons) come to me as I remember Helmut. Each time I pour hot water down my floor drain I think of his "lecture" to me.. He went ice fishing with my husband Jim, the boys and George. Jim brought a large bag of dried fruit as a snack..LOL.the men were busy after that . Helmut's commitment to St Johns as deacon was invaluable. I offer my sincere thoughts of grace to all of the family. Phyllis Erickson
