Jack Atlas Obituary

With broken hearts we announce that Jack Atlas, child of Regina and David Atlas, passed away December 16th, 2022. The third of five children, and the first to be born outside of a displaced person camp, Jack's storied life began in Toronto's Mount Sinai Hospital in 1953, passed through Kensington Market and old Toronto, and ended here, surrounded by family, friends, and the loving staff of Matthews House Hospice. We were blessed to spend our lives with such a genuine and unique person: his joviality and obscure sense of humour are irreplaceable. Jack was proud of and absolutely adored his children and grandchildren. He leaves behind his wife Trish Woodley and his four children and their partners, Kyla & Kyle, Hailie & Dave, Jordan & Alyssa, Dustin & Rebecca, and was known as Zayde to Hayes, Bennett, Gabriel, Ramona, and Frances. One of Jack's many pleasures - alongside baseball, finding blueberries on sale, and beating us at scrabble - was reading the obituary column in the Alliston Herald. We wish he was here to read this one too. Donations in his name can be given to Matthews House Hospice.

We would like to invite you to celebrate his life at the Gibson Centre, Jan 14th 1:00pm.

Jack was a fabulous human being. Funny, generous, and ferociously loyal. I will miss him, very much.
My most sincere condolences to his family

A Facebook post about Jack: My old friend Jack Atlas died on December 16--the anniversary of my Mother's death. He was one of my teachers on the Shoa and the experience of the Jews. He was also irrepressibly funny, bright and playful. I loved to be around him. He never wrote a book or gathered worshipful disciples. He worked with his tough Father and later with his wonderful son. He had four brilliant children and a sweet wife who loved him. He worked with ordinary folks and treated them with dignity and kindness. He was honest and gentle. I will always try and follow his example.

I love Jack. Sadly, I wasn´t aware he was terminally ill as I returned home to Nova Scotia to retire. Send him a Christmas note and, well, I wasn´t rewarded with a Jackism! The ultimate family man, he promised me a visit! Jack was one of my true friends when I was living in the area. He is, by any stretch, a unique character. Certainly, off the beaten track. Jackisms should be included in standard dictionaries. Jack was always interesting, insightful, witty, frank, generous, and very supportive. An eminently decent and brilliant soul! I can imagine seeing Jack in Homer´s Hades. Unlike the other wandering phantoms, like the legendary Socrates, he´d keep you entertained, joyful and pensive. His loss is Hades´ gain, but we will all be joining him someday, and he will lighten our hearts. I love Jack.

I´m so very sorry to hear of Jack´s passing. Though I´d only known Jack a relatively short time, we had some good chats when he dropped in to our store. I´d seen the video taken at Matthews House when family gathered to share music but didn´t realize that it was Jack. My sincere condolences to Trish and family.

Trish and family, I'm so sorry for your loss. That's a beautiful tribute to Jack, and I'm reminded of him telling a couple colourful stories about his youth in the market.
I wish you all love and strength as you grieve your loss.
