Vera Walker Obituary

Mom passed away peacefully at Squamish Hospice on April 7 at the age of 97. She lived a good long life with fairly good health and a wicked memory! So I better get this right.
Vera was born 4th of the 7 siblings - 4 boys and 3 girls on a farm in a southern Alberta town called Stavely. She left home at 15 and worked in Calgary. When she met my Dad they soon married and moved to Vancouver then built a store in North Vancouver which Mom managed. They had two girls Carol and Louise but eventually they divorced. Mom wanted a change so she took a job as a cook for a shingle mill at Brandywine Falls in 1956 where she also cooked for the crew clearing land for Daisy Lake and the Dam. She cooked in shifts in two different buildings! In between she loved to fish and she would trade fish for vegetables from Lillooet with the crew on the Wayfreight train. It was very lonely in the winter when all the work stopped and we were the only souls there.

In 1958 she took a job for a logging crew in Mount Currie, Cascade Fir Products. The boss ended up being her second husband, George Walker (also deceased). Mom was always busy- she had her chickens, ducks and turkeys and in addition guinea hens and peacocks. There were also pigs, horses, donkeys, and mules, a beef calf and her prized milk cow, Honey. She had a big well tended garden and canned everything. She was a very
generous and giving woman, volunteering when needed and helping to raise 5 foster children for a few years. She loved her grandsons and spent an enormous amount of time with them ever thankful of the proximity in which they lived. They left the Walkerville farm when George developed Alzheimers, moved to WhiteRock and she cared for him until he passed.

Vera lived in Squamish for more than 20 years, volunteering at Pearls, Hilltop House and a second hand store that had books. She loved to read and was never far from a book. She was a fabulous cook and continued making cookies for everyone until she went to Hospice.

Vera was predeceased by both husbands and all of her brothers and sisters. She was the matriarch of the family and much loved. She is survived by her 2 daughters, Carol (Peter) and Louise, 2 grandsons, Pete (Tanya) and Jason (Stephanie) 4 great grandchildren, Asia (Taylor), Nile (Cecilie), Alex (Chantal) and Max and a great great grandson (Wyatt). The family is happy that she is at peace but we will all miss her so very much.
There will be no formal service at her request.
