Grant Gjerde Obituary

1948 – 2017

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the sudden passing of Grant Alfred Gjerde, of St. Albert, on January 7, 2017.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 37 years, Winnie; children, Christina (Doug) Shoults, Patricia Gjerde, and Gregory Gjerde; grandchildren, Ella, and Elijah Shoults; sister, Ethel (Jim) Orr; and numerous relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Carl, and Edna Gjerde.

Grant was born on December 18, 1948, in Tofield, AB. He spent his childhood in Ryley and Camrose. He started work at the age of 12, delivering newspapers for the Camrose Booster, and began his career as a printer at the Booster at the age of 16. He worked 52 years in this trade. It was at a print shop that he met Winnie in 1978. They were married March 15, 1980. Christina was born in August 1981, Patricia in April 1983, and Gregory in June 1986. They settled in St. Albert in 1983 and made many great friends over the past 34 years on Finch Crescent. Grant's grandchildren were the light of his life, and he loved spending time with them. Papa never missed a game, practice, concert or even just movie night with them. Grant was blessed to have many, many friends and relatives visit with him since he was diagnosed, and he loved these visits.

Special thanks to Dr. Doug Maciver and all the incredible staff at Foyer Lacombe Hospice for all the wonderful care they gave Grant in his last few months; their kindness and compassion will always be gratefully appreciated and remembered.

A Celebration of Grant's Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday January 14, 2017, at Connelly-McKinley St. Albert Funeral Home, 9 Muir Drive, St. Albert, Alberta.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Grant's name to Foyer Lacombe Hospice, 1 St. Vital Ave, St. Albert, AB, T8N 1K1, The Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research or the charity of one's choosing.

Winnie and family,
We've been away for a few days, south of Tucson, and just got home in time to see Ethel's information about the link to Grant's service. We felt so lucky to be able to feel a part of the service...to laugh and cry with all of you...as Grant was so lovingly remembered and accurately described. So often, we've thought Grant was the absolute image of Ted...both being such incredibly kind men. We know he will be missed by you, every day. The blessing is that you had such a great guy for your husband, Dad, granddad! And we are blessed as well to have had him in our lives. We feel lucky and will remember his visits...on a motorcycle to our wedding in 1971, visiting with you, Winnie, over the years and then coming to both Mom and Dad's memorials. Very special. Thanks for sharing Grant with us!
Love, Vicki and Scrub

I was sad to read about Grant's passing. I remember all the times I came to stay with you, Ethel, in Camrose when we were about 12 years old. Grant was always tolerant of our giggling girlish shenanigans. Are you and Jim still living in Edmonton? Condolences to the whole family.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all on this day. Grant and your family had a great impact in my daughters life. The years of loving care in your home that were given to Jenna gave her a good foundation for life.
The kindness love and patience that Grant gave to all that came into his home will always be remembered and live on in all
us that he set the example for.
We are blessed to have had Grant and all of you in our lives.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Both myself and my husband worked many years with Grant and always enjoyed his sense of humor. He was one hell of a pressman, and taught me all about GTO numbering among many other things, he was always willing to teach and share his knowledge - lessons I still use today. He will be missed.
