Alan Veale Obituary

Born June 29, 1933; died at St. Catharines General Hospital on June 17, 2022.
Alan was born and raised on a family farm in the small community of Silver Creek, British Columbia - just outside of Salmon Arm. He lived in a two-story log house that his father built, which had no electricity or indoor plumbing, and attended a one-room schoolhouse. He was the first person from his community to go to university - graduating from UBC as a mechanical engineer in 1955. Following graduation, Alan worked at the National Research Council in Ottawa. In 1962, he obtained his Master's in City Planning from MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts. As a City Planner, he first worked as a consultant in Toronto before moving to St. Catharines in 1971, where he served as the Director of Planning for the Regional Municipality of Niagara until retiring in 1998. Alan was proud to be part of the development of the first official plan for the Region. Alan was active in the community as a member of Probus North, Torch International, Scottish Country Dancing, Friends of Morningstar Mill and St. George's Anglican Church. He will be warmly remembered for his thoughtful conversations. He leaves behind his wife Janet; daughters Alison (Gerald) of Vancouver, Jennifer (Luc) of Ottawa and Lesley (Cory) of Guelph; granddaughters Erin (Tristen), Gwyn, Joelle and Amelie; siblings Brian (deceased) (Millie), Ken, Mary (Tom) and Dave (Mary); and numerous nephews and nieces. He was much loved and will be missed by all. Visitors will be received at HULSE & ENGLISH FUNERAL HOME AND CHAPEL, 75 Church Street, St.Catharines on Thursday, June 23, 2022 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at ST.GEORGE'S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 83 Church Street, St.Catharines on Friday, June 24, 2022 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Doctors Without Borders or the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be welcomed.

Always remember Allan taking me in when I landed in Toronto on my first post grad job from UBC. We installed an air conditioning unit that required an enlargement to the window frame. We shared many memories from our early youth days on adjacent farms. The small multi grade primary school at Silver Creek is still functioning all these years later.

Janet and Family
Nothing we can say will make the sadness easier to cope with, we simply wanted to let you know how sorry we are and that we are thinking of you at this sad time. Thinking of Alan fondly from the square dancing (many, many years ago) and Garden City Swim Club with Jennifer and Lesley.
