Wendy and family. I was saddened to hear of the loss of your husband, father, grandfather. I will always remember how much he enjoyed taking care of his garden and yard. It was always so beautiful. I think of you all every time I walk by. You are in my thoughts and may god bless you all.

The day we beat the Falls
By mid summer in Canada´s centennial year the Chippawa Bantam baseball team had established itself as a difficult out for the larger centres from Fort Erie, Port Colborne, Welland, St. Catharines and Niagara Falls that populated our Ontario Baseball Association league. `The Falls´ had a particularly stellar squad that would go on to win the provincial `AAA´ championship over Oshawa, as did Chippawa in the `C´ category defeating Lambeth. Their #1 guy, fireballer Reg Black was on the mound for our neighbours, who considered a game against Chippawa an inconvenient, `gum on the shoe´ way to spend a Saturday and didn´t respect us, at all. Our starting pitcher was one Dan Bauer, who disguised a middling fastball with a nasty curve that kept batters off balance. Danny was strong as an ox, ego-free, and a natural hitter with a sweet level swing. He only needed to make contact with the leaden 33" Black Diamond hickory bat he used to launch rockets over the heads of unsuspecting outfielders. Danny batted cleanup and was our Babe Ruth. He took on the role of pitcher reluctantly, being more comfortable in the field. On this day he would carry us and go the distance against the vaunted Falls lineup, spreading four hits, and some tidy defense, over the seven innings. Late in the game he stretched a line drive down the line that rolled to Anderson´s front yard to knock in the runs that gave us a dramatic 2-1 victory. It was legitimate and hard-fought and on the basis of our respective play that day, I always felt we were the better `team´ and quite possibly the best in the province. As the years slide by and the wins and losses pile up, I vividly remember a quiet man named Dan calmly leading boys to victory against all odds. RIP
