Domenica Bendia

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Domenica Bendia on Saturday, March 19, 2022, in her 102th year. Domenica was married to her loving husband Leando Bendia (d. 2016) for 70 years. She is survived by her daughter Diane Poehlman (Greg), and son Alan Bendia (Diane). Cherished grandmother to Jennifer Weatherup (Greg), Carolyn Pauhl (Jeremy), Christine Bendia, and Elizabeth Bendia (John Pockler). Much loved great-grandmother to Sophie and Spencer Weatherup and Alexis and Josh Pauhl.
Domenica is predeceased by her father Francesco, mother Margherita, loving husband Leando (d.2016), and brother John Boggio (d. 2015) and his wife Mary Boggio (d. 2022). She is survived by her sisters-in-law Jean Walsh (late Lou) and Albina Hopkins (late Jack), and brother-in-law John Chesniak (late Margaret). Domenica was predeceased by her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Louis and Mary Bendia, Sarah and Andy Dionne, Quindo and Josephine Bendia, Clyde and Ester Bendia, Louise and Emmerson Sprung, Nora and Eldon Minor, and Lisa and Harry Biederman.
Domenica was born in Rondissone, Italy, in 1921, and immigrated with her mother to Canada a year later. There they met up with her father, Francesco Boggio, who had settled in Port Colborne. She would live her entire life in Port Colborne.
Her family was always very important to her. Whether it was with her immediate family of children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren, or with the Bendia and Boggio families. She always enjoyed her close-knit families.
Domenica spent her early years working at the Sunbeam Shoe Factory, and later worked for Sears.
For many years Domenica and Leando where active members in various church ministries at St. Therese of Lisieux R.C. Church. Domenica was one of the founding members of the St. Therese of Lisieux CWL. She enjoyed knitting, volunteering in the community, and traveling, especially to Florida, Mexico, and Europe. She also attended numerous band concerts where Leando played the clarinet.
Recently when asked how old she was, she would proudly reply "100 years old and that's a pretty good age." The family of Domenica would like to thank all the staff at Portal Village for all their care, support, while living there.
Domenica's family will receive friends at the ARMSTRONG FUNERAL HOME AND CHAPEL, 179 Clarence Street, Port Colborne on Thursday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Vigil Prayers will be recited at the funeral home on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Therese of Lisieux Church 379 Fares Street, Port Colborne on Friday, March 25, 2022 at 10:00 a.m., with Fr. Janusz Roginski as celebrant. Rite of committal will follow at Mount St. Joseph Cemetery. If so desired, memorial donations may be made to St. Therese of Lisieux R.C.
